About the role

The Lark Machine Shop Technician is a progressive position requiring individuals to work in a machine shop environment to support the Duke Energy Generation Fleet. Individuals in this position must be agile in their skillsets and have the ability to be flexible since the work is directly dictated by the priorities of the fleet. The Lark Maintenance Shop provides specialty repair services, including reverse engineering components, refurbishment/replacement of aged components, repair of turbine-generator related components, and complete overhaul of balance-of-plant pumps.

Responsibilities

• Disassemble various mechanical equipment (e.g., pumps, valves, gearboxes) and inspect components.
• Perform machining operations associated with the repair, refurbishment, or creation of new mechanical components, including:
  • Lathe operations
  • Milling operations
  • Boring operations
  • Drilling operations
  • Grinding operations
• Use precision instruments to an accuracy of 0.001”.
• Perform inspection and manufacture of parts using precision measuring and testing equipment (M&TE), including:
  • OD and ID micrometers
  • Vernier calipers
  • Dial gauges
  • Hardness testers
  • XRF analyzer
• Operate various location vehicles and equipment, including:
  • Forklifts
  • Pickup trucks
  • Man lifts (scissor and boom lifts)
  • Steam cleaners
  • Sandblasters
  • Water jet
  • Oxy/fuel cutting operations
• Maintain proficiency to safely inspect, install, and use rigging with overhead pendant cranes up to 60T capacity.
• Safely use rigging and lifting techniques to transport and invert large components.
• Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and maintain housekeeping during operations.
• Travel to support fleet requests (5-15%).
• Read and interpret shop drawings, blueprints, work instructions, and procedures.
• Effectively use computer software (Inventor-CAD, Microsoft Office programs, SharePoint online, etc.).
• Maintain detailed skillsets, including:
  • Equipment Specialist: Expert knowledge for disassembly, inspection, repair, and reassembly of RRE/Nuclear mechanical components, including valves, pumps (single and multi-stage, split case horizontal, large vertical), gearboxes, turbine-generator related components, or any other balance-of-plant equipment.
  • Hands-on experience in the assembly, disassembly, and repair of various styles of pumps, both in shop and field environments.
  • Direct experience with shop disassembly, inspection, repair, and reassembly of ring section boiler feed pumps, volute-style boiler feed pumps, multistage horizontal pumps, multistage vertical pumps, single-stage vertical pumps, and diffuser-style pumps.
  • Ability to utilize digital metrology equipment (e.g., FARO, Hexagon, Leika) along with associated software (Inspire).

• High school diploma or GED.
• Ability to set up and operate safely and independently:
  • Manual lathes
  • Milling machines
  • Boring machines (both horizontal and vertical)
  • Grinders
  • Drills
  • Large metal cutting saws
• Ability to perform machining operations to hold close tolerances (±0.001”).
• Ability and willingness to follow work instructions or procedures as required.
• Ability to remain agile to support the fleet outside of the home base location as needed.

Qualifications

Depending upon qualifications, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position at one of the following levels:

• Lark Maintenance Shop Technician I: High school diploma or GED.
• Lark Maintenance Shop Technician II: High school diploma or GED and 3 years minimum related work experience.
• Lark Maintenance Shop Technician III: High school diploma or GED and 8 years minimum related work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Technical school or applicable military training.
• Journeyman mechanic/millwright certification (preferred but not required).
• Apprentice program completion (preferred but not required).
• NCCCO/NCCCR certification for mobile and/or bridge crane (preferred but not required).
• Prior experience in the disassembly/assembly of various styles of pumps and related components, both in a machine shop environment and in the field.
• Prior experience with the setup and operation of manual and CNC machines, including:
  • Lathes
  • Milling machines
  • Turning centers
  • Waterjet operations
  • Oxy/acetylene tables
• Prior experience with the setup and operation of both horizontal and vertical boring machines.
• Prior experience with field machining operations (boring bars, stud removal, flange facing, etc.).
• Prior experience with both static and dynamic balancing of pump-related components (shafts, impellers, etc.).
• Prior experience with repairing turbine/generator-related components (e.g., diaphragms, blade rings, packing boxes, oil seals/deflectors, valve subassemblies, etc.).

Working Conditions

Majority of work takes place in a controlled maintenance repair shop environment.
