At TelCom Construction, LLC, the Large Machine Operator supports the HDD drill crew by safely and efficiently operating heavy equipment used in large-diameter drilling operations.
About the role
The Machine Operator works closely with the Foreman, Drill Operator, Locator, and Reclaimer Technician to ensure smooth workflow, safe site conditions, and proper equipment usage.
Responsibilities
- Operate heavy machinery including excavators, skid steers, loaders, trenchers, and vac systems
- Support drill setup by staging pipe, tooling, mud tanks, and materials
- Assist with bore support including trenching, potholing, exposing utilities, and site preparation
- Perform safe material handling including loading/unloading pipe, tooling, and equipment
- Maintain equipment through daily inspections, greasing, fluid checks, and reporting issues
- Coordinate with drill crew to ensure proper timing and workflow during drilling operations
- Assist with environmental controls including containment, spoil management, and site cleanliness
- Follow all safety protocols including PPE, equipment lockout/tagout, and hazard awareness
- Support reclaim operations by moving materials, staging tanks, and assisting the mud system technician when needed
- Perform general labor duties when equipment operation is not required
- Attend new site Job Safety Analysis
- Safely operate and control assigned equipment
- Dig pits, trenches or potholes as directed by job plan
- Responsible for the site set-up and clean-up
- Load and unload tools, materials and equipment from truck
- Set up a safety perimeter
- Perform work in all weather conditions
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Authorization to work in the United States for this company
- High School Diploma, GED equivalent, or relevant work experience
- Valid State driver's license (cannot be Provisional), including an acceptable driving record
- Experience with drill set up and design processes (preferred)
- Experience operating heavy machinery (excavators, skid steers, loaders, trenchers)
- Ability to work safely around HDD rigs, mud systems, and moving equipment
- Strong communication skills and ability to follow direction from the Foreman
- Basic mechanical aptitude for equipment checks and minor troubleshooting
- CDL REQUIRED — Class A or Class B depending on equipment transport needs
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Ability to lift 50–75 lbs as needed
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior HDD, utility, or construction experience
- Experience supporting drill crews or trenching operations
- Familiarity with mud systems, bore support, or pipe handling
- OSHA, First Aid, or CPR certifications (company can provide)
Physical Abilities & Exposures
- Routinely: work alone in remote locations with arms above shoulder level, operate vehicle and heavy machinery, squeeze, fine hand motions, bend, stoop, stand, walk, climb stairs and lift greater than 55 pounds
- Occasionally: work in confined spaces, use ladder, keyboard and mouse
