Equipment Operator

Multiple Equipment Operator 1 positions available in the Highway Department. A CDL is required.

About the role

This is routine work operating less complex automotive equipment and performing related manual tasks. Employees operate single-chassis vehicles, often with mechanical attachments requiring simple control manipulation. Supervision may be exercised over a small crew. Work is typically performed under close supervision with detailed instructions, except for routine or repetitive assignments.

Responsibilities

• Operates dump truck hauling sand, gravel, cement, stone, dirt, and other materials on highway construction projects.
• Spreads sand or salt on icy roads; hauls snow to dumping points; plows snow with a blade attached to the truck.
• Performs traffic control and flagging duties as required.
• Performs manual tasks on highway construction and maintenance work.
• Hauls materials from storage yards to street repair crew locations; may assist in loading and unloading the truck.
• Operates trucks for garbage collection, driving slowly while laborers load garbage into the vehicle.
• Drives power tractors with grass-mowing attachments on road shoulders and in parks.
• Engages in seasonal activities, including building construction projects.
• Washes, lubricates, and services trucks with water, gas, and oil; makes minor repairs.

Requirements

• Good knowledge of automotive equipment operation principles.
• Working knowledge of the geography of the area served and New York State traffic laws.
• Working knowledge of the component parts of automotive vehicles.
• Skill in safely and efficiently operating single-chassis trucks or similar equipment in traffic and under adverse climatic conditions.
• Ability to service and make minor repairs to motor vehicles.
• Ability to perform heavy labor for prolonged periods under adverse climatic conditions.
• Ability to understand and follow written or oral instructions.
• Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required.

Pay

Starting hourly rate: $27.13
