Unit/Division: Finance and Facilities – WVSOM Main Campus, Lewisburg, WV

This is a full-time, non-exempt position requiring occasional evening and weekend work as needed. The scheduled shift is 7:00am – 3:30pm, though activities may extend beyond these hours. The position is designated as Essential, requiring on-call availability for emergency needs such as campus snow removal.

About the Role

The Landscape Worker maintains the exterior appearance of institutional buildings, lawns, plantings, and campus grounds. This role involves operating and maintaining hand tools, landscape equipment, riding equipment, and chemicals (e.g., pesticides, fertilizers, weed killer). Responsibilities include snow removal, trash removal, and assisting with other trades as requested. Work may occur on steep slopes and in close proximity to students, faculty, staff, and buildings.

This position participates in the Medical Monitoring program at no cost to the employee.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and cares for campus grounds: mows, seeds, trims, edges around trees and bushes, removes yard waste, performs snow removal, and operates equipment such as back-hoes, riding lawn mowers, forklifts, and chain saws.
  • Operates, services, and maintains power tools and equipment, including weed eaters, lawn mowers, rototillers, chain saws, fertilizer spreaders, small seeders, sod cutters, walk-behind sweepers, and vacuums.
  • Operates, services, and maintains grounds maintenance equipment, such as trucks, tractors, riding mowers, snow removal equipment, end loaders, tilt bed trucks, and steep slope mowing equipment.
  • Assists with landscape construction as needed and supports special events (e.g., Graduation, White Coat Ceremony).
  • Performs general tree maintenance, including planting, staking, removal, and pruning using saws, loppers, and chain saws.
  • Safely lifts, carries, and transports office furniture, including disassembly and reassembly for relocation or installation.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or directed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • One to two (1-2) years of recent, directly related experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination.
  • Knowledge of grounds-keeping procedures, labor and custodial methods, and safety principles.
  • Familiarity with landscape chemicals, including pesticides, fertilizers, and weed killer, as well as their safe mixing and application.
  • Ability to safely operate a bucket truck and perform work at elevated heights.
  • Basic mathematical calculation skills.
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to operate all related labor and grounds-keeping equipment and tools.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend instructions.
  • Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, climb, and lift heavy items (50-75 pounds) for extended periods.
  • Proficiency with common WVSOM software applications, email systems (e.g., Outlook), and basic data entry.
  • Ability to work in extreme temperatures and exposure to outdoor weather conditions, dust, fumes, and chemicals.

Pay

Base salary of $16.50/hour ($32,175 annually) with excellent state benefits.

Schedule

37.5 hours per week. The weekly schedule will be established between the supervisor and employee based on departmental and institutional needs.
