This position establishes an eligibility list for up to six (6) months, which may be used to fill vacancies within various departments.

About the role

The Landscape Maintenance Inspector inspects, reviews, and evaluates the work of the City’s landscape maintenance contractors. Performs field inspections of landscaping, maintenance, and irrigation systems to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Perform inspection work in the review and evaluation of landscaping installations, related maintenance, and irrigation systems throughout the City; perform administrative work associated with the position and other maintenance activities.
  • Oversee contractors’ work, including inspection, review, and verification, to ensure compliance with contracts for landscaping, maintenance, irrigation systems, and backflow prevention. Monitor work on medians, parkways, right of ways, and other City landscape areas.
  • Ensure contractors comply with required licenses or certificates: Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC), Qualified Applicator License (QAL), Pest Control Advisor (PCA), C-27 Landscape Contractor License, or Certified Arborist.
  • Check, monitor, and review work to ensure mowing, edging, trimming, watering, tree trimming, fertilizing, and planting are completed according to contract terms.
  • Coordinate with contractors to correct deficiencies found through inspections; create punch list documents and ensure execution of items.
  • Respond to and engage with customers and the general public on complaints or concerns.
  • Assess and evaluate requirements for additional landscaping and irrigation needs.
  • Provide assistance, direction, and input for future landscape and maintenance needs; coordinate with volunteer organizations and groups for planting projects.
  • Prepare, draft, and present written reports of inspections; operate two-way radio, City vehicle, and other pertinent equipment.
  • Attend, conduct, and participate in meetings and seminars.
  • Provide training, guidance, and direction to other staff and maintenance workers; communicate and monitor adherence to regulations and compliance standards.
  • Provide courteous and expeditious customer service to the general public and City staff, including timely response to 311 Service Requests.
  • Participate in the revision and adaptation of landscape contracts and procedures; assess and execute various projects and policy implementations.
  • Plan, prepare, and assist with volunteer events.
  • Attend community meetings as needed.
  • Assist with emergency storm events as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School graduation or satisfactory equivalent (GED).
  • Three (3) years of experience in landscape installation and maintenance duties, including interpreting plans for landscaping and irrigation layout, and standard planting and ground maintenance.
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid class “C” California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Supplemental education in horticulture, urban forestry, or environmental studies.
  • Irrigation Certification.
  • Arborist Certification/License.
  • Experience with Cal Sense Irrigation Controller.

Benefits

  • Retirement:
    • Classic Members: 2.7% at age 55; 3-year final compensation. Employee contribution: 8%.
    • New Members: 2% at age 62; 3-year final compensation. Employee contribution: 50% of the normal cost (subject to change per CalPERS). The City does not participate in Social Security.
  • Health Insurance: Six health insurance plans with a City contribution up to $1,687 per month for HMO plans (family coverage).

  • Deferred Compensation: City contributes $50 per month with a minimum employee contribution of $12.50 per check (optional participation).

  • Flexible Spending Account: Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Plan (optional participation).
  • State Disability Insurance: Automatic coverage administered by the State of California.
  • Vacation Accrual:
    • 0-4 years: 80 hours
    • 5-9 years: 120 hours
    • 10+ years: 160 hours

For part-time, benefitted positions, insurance and other benefits are pro-rated based on ½ or ¾ time status.
