About the role

The Prevention Specialist I/II position involves providing education, consultation services, and training for other staff, community agencies, and the public. The role includes developing, monitoring, and coordinating program goals; meeting with individuals, families, and groups to promote substance abuse prevention; maintaining records and preparing reports; and conducting community substance abuse prevention programs.

Requirements

• One (1) year of experience working in substance abuse prevention or related social services in a public or certified private welfare agency.
• Completion of a two (2) year college degree in behavioral sciences, psychology, social work, marriage and family counseling or a related field.
• Two (2) years of experience working in substance abuse prevention and related social services in a public or certified private welfare agency at a level comparable to that of a Prevention Specialist I with the County of Lake.
• Completion of a four (4) year college degree in behavioral sciences, psychology, social work, marriage and family counseling, or a related field.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate valid California Driver’s License.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of psychological and social aspects and characteristics of substance abuse.
• Knowledge of drugs and drug abuse patterns, alcoholism, and the physiological effects of drug abuse and alcoholism.
• Knowledge of methods and techniques for conducting assessments of individuals’ substance abuse problems.
• Knowledge of available community resources for substance abuse services.
• Knowledge of requirements and needs of persons with serious substance abuse problems.
• Knowledge of state and local laws, policies, and procedures governing the administration of alcohol and drug prevention and treatment programs.

Skills

• Ability to handle stress and unstable client behavior.
• Ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Ability to explain complex and technical terminology and concepts in an understandable and non-threatening manner.
• Ability to establish and maintain a variety of personal and administrative records, clinical documentation, and related materials.
• Ability to represent the Substance Abuse Program in contacts with clients, the public, community organizations, other County staff, and other government organizations.
• Ability to work well under pressure, meeting multiple and sometimes conflicting deadlines.
• Ability to demonstrate cooperative behavior with colleagues, supervisors, and customers/clients.
