Land Surveyor Trainee/Assistant Land Surveyor (NYHELPS)

Description

The duties of this position will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develops and implements policy for the acquisition of lands and properties and negotiates actual purchase/exchange by first establishing a property's market value.
  • Assists in maintaining department survey and land records under the direction and supervision of a licensed land surveyor.
  • Searches internal and public records for survey and title information.
  • Supervises and trains field crews in the operation of modern terrestrial, geodetic surveying, geographic positioning system instruments, proper field survey procedures, and work zone safety.
  • Plans and schedules work assignments for projects.
  • Maintains and performs basic maintenance on survey equipment.
  • Conducts reconnaissance and field surveys of State Park property lines.
  • Prepares deed plots and reviews consultant-derived boundary maps for accuracy.
  • Processes, balances, and transforms data derived from Optical and GPS observations.
  • Affirms determination of park boundaries through survey field measurements and research.
  • Prepares survey maps for acquiring and managing state interest in real property in a computer-aided drafting system.
  • Performs field inspections of land and prepares reports of physical inspections.
  • Performs property boundary surveys utilizing applicable survey principles and practices to determine the State's title boundaries.

Qualifications

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).

  • Minimum Qualifications:
  • A bachelor’s degree program in surveying or surveying technology from an Engineering Accreditation Commission, Engineering Technology Accreditation, or Commission Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology accredited;
  • Eligibility to sit for the Fundamentals of Surveying examination through the National Council for Examiners of Engineering and Surveying via letter issued by the New York State Board for Engineering and Land Surveying (proof of eligibility required).
  • Assistant Land Surveyor SG-20: Proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Surveying Examination (FS) or successful completion of 52 weeks of service as a Land Surveyor Trainee and successful completion of the FS examination**.
  • Subsequent 55-b/c Qualifications:
  • A subsequent 55-b/c appointment may be considered if you have at least one year of permanent or contingent-permanent qualifying service and have a current Civil Service 55-b/c letter of eligibility.
  • Provisional Qualifications:
  • Proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Surveying Examination (FS) or successful completion of 52 weeks of service as a Land Surveyor Trainee and successful completion of the FS examination**.
  • Transfer Qualifications:
  • At least one year of permanent or contingent-permanent qualifying service as a Land Surveyor Technician 2, SG-16.

Operating Needs

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
  • Must be able to work in remote areas, negotiate difficult terrain, and work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Travel may be required.
  • Overtime may be required.
  • Overnight travel may be required.
  • Telecommuting may be available, will be discussed at interview.

  • Assistant Land Surveyor, SG-20 - $74,193/yr - $94,121/yr
