Land Surveyor Trainee/Assistant Land Surveyor NY HELPS - Region 10

About the role

Investigates and examines the evidence of real property locations in the field. Plots survey results to create detailed base mapping. Supervises and trains field crew staff on researching records relating to the ownership and location of real property.

Prepares survey maps for acquiring and managing State interest in real property and/or prepares digital terrain models and base mapping for the design of capital projects. Performs survey data processing, balancing, and transforming horizontal and vertical control.

Performs research and analysis of private and public records necessary to trace title documents, preparation of survey reports, and contract preparation. Makes precise field measurements, supervises, and trains field crew staff in the operation of modern terrestrial, geodetic surveying, geographic positioning systems, proper field survey procedures, and work zone safety.

Evaluates, analyzes, and compiles field evidence and record documentation evidence to determine property and highway boundary lines. Plans and schedules work assignments for specific projects and research records relating to the ownership and location of real property.

Assists in the establishment of standards and procedures utilized in surveying/mapping and in the pursuit of technological advances. Assists in development of specifications for the procurement of surveying hardware and software. Supports regional survey units with equipment and operations assistance.

Assists with Term Agreement for Surveying Services (T.A.S.S.) proposals, planning, scheduling, acquisition map review, and approval of claims for payment.

• Support regional survey units with equipment and operational assistance.
• Assist with T.A.S.S. proposals, planning, scheduling, map reviews, and payment approvals.

Requirements

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). To be considered, candidates must meet the open competitive minimum qualifications for this position.

Qualifications

• Either:
  • A bachelor’s degree in surveying or surveying technology from an Engineering Accreditation Commission, Engineering Technology Accreditation, or Commission Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology accredited program; or
  • Eligibility to sit for the Fundamentals of Surveying examination through the National Council for Examiners of Engineering and Surveying via letter issued by the New York State Board for Engineering and Land Surveying (proof of eligibility required).

Career Progression

As a Land Surveyor Trainee, you will serve a 24-month traineeship leading to Assistant Land Surveyor, Grade 20. To advance, you must pass the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Surveying Examination (FS) and complete the traineeship satisfactorily. Early advancement is possible after 12 months if the FS is passed. It is your responsibility to notify the appointing authority upon passing the FS.

Assistant Land Surveyor requires proof of passing the NCEES FS or successful completion of 52 weeks as a Land Surveyor Trainee and passing the FS. Candidates may also qualify through Civil Service eligible lists, reassignment, or transfer.

Pay

Starting salary for a Land Surveyor Trainee: $66,951.

Starting salary for an Assistant Land Surveyor: $97,673 (includes $84,173 base salary plus up to $13,500 geographic pay). Maximum compensation: $107,621 (includes $94,121 standard job rate plus $13,500 geographic pay). Additional adjustments of $2,000 (Mid-Hudson) or $4,000 (Downstate) may apply based on location.
