About the role

The Land Survey Crew Chief leads field survey operations and ensures the collection of accurate, high-quality survey data across a wide range of project types. This role operates primarily outdoors and requires strong technical proficiency with modern surveying instruments, meticulous documentation, and the ability to train and guide survey crew members. The Crew Chief plays a key role in delivering precise topographic, boundary, subdivision, ALTA, construction layout, and as-built surveys while upholding safety standards and representing the company’s core values.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct a wide variety of land surveys, including topographic, boundary, subdivision, ALTA, construction layout, and as-built surveys.
  • Perform field work with approximately 95% of time spent outdoors, working around vehicle traffic, sun exposure, varying environmental noise, and mechanical equipment.
  • Collect accurate and high-quality survey data to support engineering, construction, and land development projects.
  • Oversee the operation, care, and routine maintenance of survey equipment to ensure reliability and accuracy.
  • Operate survey instruments, including levels and robotic total stations with electronic data collectors, to perform precise measurements.
  • Utilize GPS and Trimble GPS equipment to perform topographic and other survey tasks with high accuracy.
  • Use total stations and related equipment from manufacturers such as Topcon and Leica to execute survey assignments.
  • Take accurate and clear field notes, documenting all relevant measurements, conditions, and observations.
  • Perform note reduction and convert field notes into usable data for plans, reports, and design work.
  • Read and interpret plans, drawings, and specifications to ensure surveys are completed in accordance with project requirements.
  • Coordinate survey activities with project teams to ensure alignment with land development and construction objectives.
  • Train survey crew members in the proper use of equipment and effective field techniques to maintain quality and consistency.
  • Promote adherence to safety policies and ensure the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) during all field activities.
  • Represent the company positively in the field, demonstrating professionalism and alignment with core values.
  • Support accurate data transfer and integration with design software such as Civil 3D, as needed for project workflows.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in land surveying with the ability to independently lead field survey operations.
  • Hands-on experience conducting topographic, boundary, subdivision, ALTA, construction layout, and as-built surveys.
  • Strong proficiency operating survey instruments, including levels and robotic total stations with electronic data collectors.
  • Ability to use GPS and Trimble GPS equipment for precise survey measurements.
  • Experience using total stations and related equipment from manufacturers such as Topcon and Leica.
  • Demonstrated ability to take accurate, clear field notes and perform note reduction.
  • Ability to read and understand plans, drawings, and project specifications.
  • Experience training and mentoring survey crew members in equipment usage and field techniques.
  • Understanding of land development processes and how survey data supports design and construction.
  • Commitment to adherence to company safety policies and consistent use of supplied PPE.
  • Ability to work productively in outdoor environments with exposure to traffic, sun, environmental noise, and mechanical equipment.
  • Professional demeanor with the ability to serve as a positive representative of the company and its core values.

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Civil 3D or similar design and drafting software for integration of survey data.
  • Knowledge of PLS (Professional Land Surveyor) practices or working experience in support of licensed surveyors.
  • Familiarity in land development projects, including coordination with engineering and construction teams.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills for managing multiple projects and datasets.
  • Effective communication skills for working with crew members, project managers, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to adapt to changing field conditions and travel requirements.

Work Environment

This role is based out of Raleigh, NC and requires up to 100% travel, with all travel-related costs paid. The position involves working approximately 95% of the time outdoors, often in proximity to vehicle traffic, under sun exposure, and around varying environmental noise and mechanical equipment. Field work requires consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with company safety policies. The work environment is highly field-oriented and utilizes modern surveying technologies, including levels, robotic total stations with electronic data collectors, GPS and Trimble GPS systems, and equipment from manufacturers such as Topcon and Leica. Survey data may be integrated with design tools such as Civil 3D as part of the project workflow.

Pay

The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $44.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.

Schedule

This is a fully onsite position in Raleigh, NC.
