About The Farm
Longview farm is a family homestead based on 38 acres of forest, fields and gardens 7 miles northeast of Hillsborough. We aim to grow nourishing food and care for the land in ways that support healthy soil and natural ecosystems. We are currently developing a diverse vegetable garden, orchard and silvopasture system for our flock of heritage chickens, alongside wildlife-friendly gardens and woodlands.
Responsibilities
- Managing woodland — brush clearing, thinning, pruning, planting and monitoring tree health
- Supporting the growth of no-till vegetable garden, orchard and pollinator habitat
- Assisting with the development of silvopasture grazing system for chickens — planting cover crops, moving temporary fencing, planting and protecting young trees
- Improving fields and pastures — mowing, maintaining fencelines and planting trees & hedgerows
- Producing firewood, timber, biochar and woodchip mulch for use around the property
- Building out compost and reuse systems
- Record keeping and coordinating work with occasional subcontractors
Qualifications
- Previous work in a farm, landscaping or forestry context, preferably in a management or supervisory role
- Interest in ecological, regenerative land management principles
- Experience safely operating and maintaining light machinery and manual tools (riding mower, woodchipper, brush cutter, chainsaw, pruners, axes)
- Physical stamina and ability to work outside in all safe weather conditions
- Experience with animal husbandry or willingness to learn, especially poultry!
- Familiarity with native trees and invasive species identification and control
- Basic carpentry/DIY skills
Compensation
$22-24 per hour (dependent on experience)
Fresh produce, eggs and firewood
PTO to be agreed
