About the Role

The Lactation Consultant serves as the clinical resource for breastfeeding for patients, staff, and providers. Actively promotes breastfeeding and safe feeding practices throughout all areas of the organization where patients might be served, including the inpatient unit, outpatient program, the emergency room, or via the Warmline. Collaborates with the lactation consultant team to coordinate all aspects of the lactation program and monitors its effectiveness and quality. Works with the clinical education department and clinical units to assess staff educational needs, develop, and plan education programs as needed.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates competency, individually and as part of the multidisciplinary team, in performing clinical care and assessment of all patient populations.
• Assesses knowledge of nursing staff on breastfeeding and designs/implements education programs to benefit staff.
• Serves as a liaison to medical staff to ensure that information provided to patients is standard and uniform.
• Reviews, revises, and standardizes all printed and audio-visual information available to patients on breastfeeding.
• Collaborates with the lactation consultant team on the coordination of all aspects of the outpatient lactation program.
• Serves as lactation consultant for inpatients, outpatients, and via telephone support line.
• Serves as a role model and resource to patient care staff on breastfeeding issues.
• Assists with the Health/Physician Referral Line, the Warm Line, and serves as the telephone triage nurse as needed, providing prompt assessment, support, and referrals to patients and families.
• Collects data, maintains a database, and prepares reports on the quality and success of the program.
• Preserves and protects patients' rights to confidentiality.
• Performs other job-related duties as required or requested.

Requirements

• Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in Rhode Island.
• Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners certification (IBCLC) required.
• Valid Rhode Island Lactation Consultant licensure (LLC) required.
• Minimum of 3 years of related work experience as an RN/IBCLC required.
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
• Teaching experience preferred.
• Excellent human relations and communication skills required.
