Responsibilities
- Perform expert lactation assessments and skills by consistently identifying, assessing, and solving issues within scope of practice; demonstrates expert clinical judgment in complicated lactation/human milk scenarios.
- Develop and implement feeding plans (breastfeeding, pumping, supplementation).
- Performs initial and on-going assessments of the parent/baby dyad’s lactation goals.
- Affords assistance in evaluating procedures, developing, and implementing the safe handling of milk fed in the postpartum unit.
- Provide equitable care to diverse populations, including those with cultural, linguistic, or socioeconomic challenges.
- Communicate effectively with healthcare teams, patients, and families.
- Serve as a resource for healthcare staff across various departments.
- Deliver evidence-based education to OB services staff.
- Revise policies to reflect current lactation research and evidence-based practices.
- Plan and lead breastfeeding support groups for OB patients and members of the Rush community.
- Monitor and evaluate quality and safety issues related to lactation practices.
- Stay updated with lactation research and pursue continuing education.
- Actively engage in professional organizations, workshops, and seminars.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing.
- Current RN license in Illinois.
- International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- At least 2 years of clinical experience in maternal/child nursing.
