About the Role
Join the City of Auburn Department of Public Works as a Laborer Refuse Collection and perform meaningful work that directly impacts the residents of Auburn every day. This role involves providing reliable and efficient garbage collection services, maintaining clean neighborhoods, and ensuring refuse is collected and handled safely.
Responsibilities
- Perform residential and/or commercial refuse collection along assigned routes.
- Assist with the collection, loading, and proper disposal of municipal refuse.
- Safely lift, carry, move, and handle refuse containers, bags, and bulky items.
- Assist the Motor Equipment Operator with the safe and efficient operation of garbage collection routes.
- Ride on and work around refuse collection vehicles and equipment while following all safety procedures.
- Monitor collection routes and report missed pickups, damaged containers, unsafe conditions, or other service concerns.
- Follow established collection routes, schedules, safety procedures, and departmental policies.
- Maintain clean and orderly streets and collection areas by properly handling refuse and addressing spills or debris when necessary.
- Perform snow removal, hauling, cleanup, and other Department of Public Works duties as assigned.
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions throughout the year.
- Maintain a professional and courteous relationship with City residents and the general public.
- Work as part of a dedicated team providing essential services to the City of Auburn.
Requirements
- Dependable, hardworking, and safety-conscious.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work, including frequent walking, lifting, carrying, bending, pushing, and pulling.
- Ability to safely lift and handle refuse containers, bags, bulky items, and other materials.
- Ability to work safely around moving vehicles, heavy equipment, and refuse collection machinery.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and other conditions.
- Ability to follow directions, established routes, safety procedures, and departmental policies.
- Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team.
- Strong commitment to workplace safety, teamwork, and public service.
- Professional and courteous interaction with residents, coworkers, and the general public.
- Willingness to perform overtime, emergency work, or other departmental assignments when required.
- Valid New York State Driver’s License preferred.
- Ability and willingness to obtain additional licenses or certifications as required by the City.
