About the role
A vacancy exists in the Department of Public Works and Transportation, Bureau of Sanitation, Solid Waste Management.
Responsibilities
- Performs unskilled and semi-skilled labor work, using hand and power operated tools.
- Trains and assists in the operation of Laborer II level equipment and trucks.
- Digs, shores-up, and backfills trenches.
- Mixes concrete.
- Patches concrete and macadam road surfaces.
- Spreads stones, chips, and cinders.
- Clears debris from storm drains.
- Shovels snow.
- Sprays topsoil.
- Cuts grass, trims shrubbery, and clears brush.
- Assists in installing water and sewer connections.
- Assists in repairing leaks in water and sewer pipes.
- Assists in operating sewer stoppages.
- Assists with simple carpentry work.
- Does occasional rough painting work.
- Cleans yards and shops.
- Cleans and sweeps streets.
- Operates a variety of hand and power operated tools and machines.
- Cleans and maintains tools, machines, and other equipment.
- Loads and unloads trucks.
- Dispenses gasoline.
- Flags traffic at railroad crossings or at construction or repair sites.
- Performs other unskilled labor tasks.
- Participates in safety related training including, but not limited to, confined space and trench working conditions and the handling of hazardous materials.
Qualifications
- Basic knowledge of unskilled manual labor tasks.
- Ability to learn to perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled labor tasks.
- Ability to operate hand and power tools in a safe manner.
- Ability to follow instructions.
- Ability to read street signs and simple written material.
- Knowledge of labor tasks associated with construction and maintenance of sewers, storm drains, and roads.
- Knowledge of applicable safety procedures.
- Knowledge of applicable County and departmental rules and regulations.
- Skills in the safe operation of tools, equipment, and machines used on the job.
- Ability to apply acquired knowledge to increasingly varied and complex tasks.
- Ability to perform duties independently and to work as part of a team.
- Ability to train on equipment and vehicles of higher complexity.
- Ability to complete assigned tasks by established deadlines.
- Ability to complete simple forms.

Benefits
Salary: Pay Schedule II, Grade H13, Regular schedule: 40 hours per week.
Conditions of Employment: Some positions in this classification will be designated as emergency/essential. Employees in this classification will be required to work overtime with little or no advance notice.
Physical and Environmental Conditions: The work of this classification entails the performance of heavy physical labor including bending, stooping, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and the operation of hand and power tools and equipment. Some work requires exposure to potentially hazardous conditions such as standing in traffic, working in trenches, and adverse weather. Some duties may require travel between work sites.

Salary Annual Salary review - Step increases may be granted on anniversary date based on satisfactory job performance
General Increases - Cost of living increases and adjustments may be granted as legislated.
Longevity Increases - In accordance with the specific pay schedule, a full-time merit or classified employee may receive a longevity increase, equivalent to one step, upon completion of a certain number of years of classified service with the County.
