About the role
Under general supervision of a superintendent or foreman, a Laborer performs a variety of manual or semiskilled tasks to install, repair, and maintain asphalt surfaces like roads, parking lots, and driveways.
Responsibilities
- Surface Preparation: Clearing debris, sweeping work areas, and digging or repairing holes to prepare for new asphalt.
- Asphalt Distribution: Shoveling, raking, and spreading hot mix asphalt or stone materials by hand shovel, skid loader, lutes and or other means where necessary.
- Finishing & Compaction: Using lutes and tamping tools to smooth surface irregularities and ensure the asphalt meets specific grade and thickness requirements.
- Equipment Operation: Operating small power tools like jackhammers, pavement saws, and vibratory plate compactors.
- Traffic Control: Setting up barricades, cones, and signs, and assists in traffic control to direct and promote a safe work zone.
- Crew Support: Assisting machine operators (paver and screed operators) by signaling movement or loading/unloading materials. Cleans, greases, and assists in maintaining equipment and tools.
- Guides and directs dump trucks while backing.
- Receives and accumulates delivery tickets.
Essential Functions
- Ability to lift and carry heavy loads of 40-50 pounds or more on a day-to-day basis.
- Ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects.
- Capacity to stand, walk, bend, and kneel for extended periods, often ranging from 8 to 4 hours, without "giving out" or fatiguing.
- Ability to quickly make coordinated movements of one's hand/arms to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
- Comfort working in extreme temperatures (heat and cold), humidity, and dusty environments.
- Ability to understand and carry out verbal and or written directions paying attention to detail.
Qualifications
- High School diploma/GED.
- Prior construction or paving experience preferred but not required.
- Ability to work in a team environment providing respect to all individuals.
- Ability to follow verbal instructions.
- Reliable transportation is required.
