Laborer (Commercial Construction)

About the Role

Supports carpenters, cement masons, ironworkers, millwrights, and pipe fitters by performing a wide range of duties and activities with a sense of urgency. Focuses on quality work, safety, productivity, reliability, and punctuality.

Responsibilities

• Pour concrete forms and employ proper vibration techniques.
• Load, transport, unload, and furnish experienced craft workers with materials.
• Level earth to fine grade specifications using hand tools as required.
• Use hand signals to communicate with operators of construction equipment for lifting, installing, and hoisting.
• Erect scaffolding, shoring, and bracing.
• Demolish buildings, saw lumber, strip forms, and attach insulating material.
• Clean work area and restock supplies and materials as necessary.
• Assist in lifting, positioning, and securing materials and work pieces during installation.
• Perform maintenance or cleaning activities.
• Perform other similar or related duties as requested or assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

• Assist in the training and orientation of employees when needed.
• Assist in employment processes as requested.
• Conform to all company policies and procedures (e.g., new hire sign-off on safety manual).
• Promote teamwork and positive communication among employees.
• Attend and participate in site meetings, sharing knowledge and ideas as needed.
• Perform any work requested by the Foreman or Project Superintendent.

Skills and Abilities

• Follow specific instructions and perform a variety of duties that may often change.
• Work within standards of accuracy and recognize proper hand signals for cranes and other equipment.
• Repeat tasks of short duration according to set procedures.
• Evaluate information using measurable standards and work rapidly and accurately with hands.
• Familiarity with forming materials and a wide range of applicable tools and equipment.
• Effectively communicate verbally with co-workers and manage time while addressing problems.
• Work positively with other employees.
• Willingness and ability to learn and consistently practice basic Safety and Health Regulations.
• Ability to attend to job duties consistently and on time.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED preferred.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Work is often performed outside under various weather conditions, including exposure to heat, cold, dust, dampness, ice, precipitation, and mud.

• Climb and maintain balance on scaffolds and ladders.
• Use arms and hands to reach for, handle, and manipulate objects and materials.
• Lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds repetitively.
• Stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl for long periods.
• Possess acceptable vision (naturally or with correction).
