Laborer
About the Role
Under the supervision of the Director for Facilities Operations, the Laborer performs general unskilled manual labor, including a variety of general repair work and preventive maintenance that does not require journey-level skills. This position assists with moving and relocation tasks, uses powered or non-powered cleaning and materials handling equipment, and operates delivery trucks. Work areas include residential facilities, administrative offices, Classics residence halls, Campus Village residential facilities, and trash/recycling rooms. The role involves maintaining the appearance and cleanliness of assigned work areas and following safe, approved methods and frequencies.
This position works an alternative work schedule and may require flexible hours, including weekdays, weekends, and some holidays.
Responsibilities
- Performs general non-maintenance and repair work; may perform repairs independently.
- Repairs and/or replaces vacuum cleaners and other miscellaneous equipment.
- Responds to daily service calls as assigned by the Associate Director for Facilities Operations.
- Assists with moving residential furniture for custodial staff during summer turnover cleaning periods.
- Delivers desk and other furniture within, to, or from offices, residential rooms, and common areas.
- Delivers and picks up canopies, tables, and chairs as requested.
- Performs furniture set up and break down during special events and upon request from all areas of the department.
- Maintains all tools and working materials in a safe condition and proper working order.
- Performs yearly preventive maintenance on all residential appliances as needed.
- Removes recycling from common areas and maintains recycling reports.
- Retrieves data and prepares reports using manual and/or computerized recording systems.
- Completes material handling delivery with powered and non-powered equipment regularly.
- Ensures daily cleanliness and appearance of assigned work areas, including shop areas, residence halls, suites, apartment complexes, and/or administrative areas.
- Reports all damages encountered while maintaining assigned work areas.
- Submits maintenance requests for needed repairs to equipment, fixtures, or infrastructure.
- Delivers received materials from vendors to assigned storage areas as requested.
Requirements
- Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.
- Ability to exercise care and follow instructions when using motorized equipment, including manual and motorized pallet jacks, hand and flat trucks, forklifts, panel carts, electric carts, state vehicles with lift gates, boom and scissor lifts, and pressure-washing equipment.
- Ability to perform strenuous manual labor and safely move heavy items in excess of 50 pounds.
- Ability to perform complex tasks involving independent judgment, accuracy, and speed.
- Ability to understand, interpret, and apply policies and regulations in specific situations.
- Ability to observe rules, regulations, and expectations to ensure a safe working environment.
- Ability to work alone as well as with other staff when assigned.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekdays, weekends, and some holidays.
- Ability to handle a high degree of customer contact and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to communicate professionally and respectfully with constituents.
- General awareness of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), and willingness to develop skills in their appropriate, responsible, and ethical use in a higher education environment.
- Must participate in all OSHA-required physicals and examinations.
- A valid driver’s license is required. Out-of-state candidates must obtain a California driver’s license within 10 days of hire.
- Must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for CSU campuses.
- Must complete and pass certification for Forklift Training.
- Must be fingerprinted; candidates convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment in a federal or state prison are ineligible.
Preferred Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 2 years of experience in appliance and furniture repair.
- 1 year of experience as a mover.
- Experience in a university or residential environment.
- Basic computer knowledge in a work environment.
Pay
Anticipated hiring range: $3,461/month – $3,747/month (Step 1 – Step 5). CSU Salary Range: $3,461/month – $3,747/month (Step 1 – Step 20).
