Primary functions include skilled manual and servicing work involving maintenance, repair, and construction activities. The role involves physical labor, operation of hand and power tools, and light to medium duty automotive equipment. Work is closely supervised initially, with increasing independence as experience is gained.

Responsibilities

  • Work as a member of a maintenance or construction crew in public works activities.
  • Shovel and move dirt; fill trenches and compact materials.
  • Assist in building and maintaining lawn areas; participate in cleaning operations.
  • Operate power tools and automotive equipment such as chain saws, power mowers, trucks, tractors, jackhammers, vac-hauls, and compressors.
  • Load and unload sand, stone, and other materials; operate trucks to carry tools and materials.
  • Patch potholes with asphalt, shovel snow, paint barrels, pick up bulk trash, sweep and collect leaves, unclog catch basins, and operate rodders.
  • Wash automotive and construction equipment.
  • Use a table saw to make barricades.

Requirements

  • Three months to one year of experience in maintenance, repair, and construction activities; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Connecticut Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) at time of application.
  • Subject to random drug screenings and must meet all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse requirements.

Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of standard equipment and hand tools; ability to acquire skill in their use.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods under unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Ability to understand and follow standard instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively with other employees and the public, maintaining safe and efficient work methods.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • Physical, manual labor requiring agility and strength for safe operation of assigned equipment.
  • Work may be performed in all weather conditions.

Schedule

Typically 40 hours per week, with a shift from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Pay

This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 424, Unit 34, United Public Service Employees Union. Hires contribute 9% of pay to the City pension instead of Social Security.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment background check, physical examination (including drug screening), and a 120-day probationary period. The City of New Haven does not sponsor employment visas; applicants must have current authorization to work in the U.S. without employer-sponsored visa support.
