Laboratory Technician
About the role
The Applied Biological Sciences Group (QLA), located within the Asymmetric Operations Sector (AOS), is seeking a Laboratory Technician to support a dynamic laboratory environment that facilitates various projects. This position requires a candidate who is organized, self-motivated, and passionate about maintaining a safe and efficient laboratory.
Responsibilities
- Serve as an integral member of the group, contributing to general lab organization, workflow management, inventory control, and instrument maintenance.
- Oversee day-to-day operations of multiple laboratories, including BSL2/BSL2+, chemical, and health engineering facilities.
- Support general procurement needs and coordinate with the APL environmental health and safety office to ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Develop and revise procedures to enhance laboratory functionality and facilitate interdisciplinary research.
- Foster a culture of safety and collaboration among team members.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- At least 1 year of experience in a biological and/or chemical laboratory.
- Experience operating and troubleshooting a variety of laboratory instrumentation.
- Experience in environmental health, occupational health, chemistry, biology, physics, environmental engineering, or a related field.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Able to obtain a Secret level security clearance.
Qualifications
- Minimum qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent, 1+ years of experience in a biological and/or chemical laboratory, experience operating and troubleshooting laboratory instrumentation, experience in a related field, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Preferred qualifications: Technical school training, Associate’s Degree, 5+ years of professional experience in Biological Sciences or relevant field, ability to create operating procedures, experience with property inventory systems, CBSP certification, ability to travel, and an active SECRET security clearance.

Pay
Pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training, and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance, or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
