Responsibilities

  • Perform blood specimen collection on adult and pediatric patients, including venous, capillary, and blood culture samples.
  • Order laboratory tests in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Process, file requisitions, and prepare specimens for testing or shipment to reference laboratories.
  • Process test results referred to other reference laboratories.
  • Answer telephones as necessary.
  • Follow all hospital and laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Verify patient identity by confirming name, date of birth, and medical record number against Epic or paper requisition prior to specimen collection.
  • Perform routine and STAT phlebotomy after verifying patient identity.
  • Label specimens in the presence of the patient.
  • Communicate with patients, explaining procedures, answering questions, and ensuring confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Collect high-quality specimens for all tests ordered (venous and capillary) from all age groups.
  • Maintain an efficient workflow, meeting draw standards of 7-9 inpatients and 8-10 outpatients per hour; assist coworkers when work in the assigned area is complete.
  • Review specimens and requisitions to ensure appropriate collection, quality, and labeling; validate transport and receipt, completing incident reports for variances.
  • Receive batches or specimens in the LIS, entering required information accurately, including practitioner orders not already in the system.
  • Deliver STAT, urgent, or other specimens to technical areas promptly.
  • Process specimens accurately, relabeling or aliquoting while maintaining specimen integrity; prepare specimens for reference labs following established policies.
  • Consistently follow all hospital and laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Assist with training new staff as requested.
  • Complete responsibilities defined on the laboratory’s task lists.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of practice.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED, required.
  • 1 year of experience in a similar capacity, preferred but not required.
  • CPT-A Phlebotomy Certification (CPT) from a formal phlebotomy program, including a minimum of sixty (60) hours of didactic training and sixty (60) hours of clinical experience, or one hundred (100) observed phlebotomy draws, preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.
  • Occasional: Crouching, grasping, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, stooping.
  • Frequent: Typing/clerical/dexterity, hearing, reaching, repetitive motion, seeing/monitor/computer use, standing, talking, visual acuity (color, depth, perception).
  • Constant: Walking, fit testing.
  • Hazards: Frequent exposure to bodily fluids/bloodborne pathogens.
  • Travel: Occasional travel may be required.

Pay

Salary is based on qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, training, and fair market evaluation. Pay range: $18.02–$27.03 per hour.
