Job Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities including but not limited to:

  • Ensures adequate staffing and efficient, effective workflow for outpatient/inpatient phlebotomy, accessioning and pathology services to meet clinical and provider demands.
  • Drives quality improvement initiatives, continuously look for means to improve department performance, service and employee morale.
  • Trains and ensures competency for new colleagues and students at AJH Support Services.
  • Holds daily team “Huddles” to foster an environment of communication and teamwork.
  • Collaborates with evening Support Services Supervisor on the creation and implementation of employee schedules. Support Services Manager will have final sign off on deviations from established scheduling practice.
  • Provides input for payroll and employee performance evaluations.
  • Communicates department concerns to Support Services Manager and makes suggestions for resolution.
  • Achieves departmental budget goals.
  • Maintains compliance with accrediting and regulatory agencies including quality improvement training, safety compliance and competency in the area of expertise.
  • Participates in special and major projects such as space planning, lean and quality improvements.
  • Is responsible for the following employment actions: hiring, corrective action, and performance reviews in the absence of Support Services Manager.
  • Incorporates Anna Jaques Hospital Mission Statement and Goals into daily activities.
  • Complies with all AJH Policies.
  • Complies with behavioral expectations of the department and AJH.
  • Maintains courteous and effective interactions with colleagues and patients.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the job description, performance expectations, and competency assessment.
  • Demonstrates a commitment toward meeting and exceeding the needs of our customers and consistently adheres to Customer Service standards.
  • Participates in departmental and/or interdepartmental quality improvement activities.
  • Participates in and successfully completes Mandatory Education.
  • Performs phlebotomy in a safe and competent manor while managing workload of each phlebotomist, accessioning staff and clinical secretary staff.
  • Performs all other duties as needed or directed to meet the needs of the department.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Licensure, Certification, Registration: Phlebotomy Certificate preferred.

  • Problem Solving: Ability to address problems that are highly varied, complex and often non-recurring, requiring staff input, innovative, creative and Lean diagnostic techniques to resolve issues.
  • Independence of Action: Ability to set goals and priorities for functional areas. May make recommendation for department policies, practices and programs. Manager or Director provides broad guidance and overall direction.
  • Written Communication: Ability to verbally communicate complex information in English effectively to all levels of staff.
  • Oral Communication: Ability to verbally communicate complex concepts in English and address sensitive situation, resolve conflicts, negotiate, motivate and persuade others.
  • Team Work: Ability to act as a team leader for small projects or work groups, creating a collaborative and respectful team environment and improving workflow. Results may impact the operations of one or more departments.
  • Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service and staff training to meet customer service standards and expectations for the Support Services Team. Resolve services issues in a timely and respectful manner.
  • Computer skills: Experience with computer skills required, including web-based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel and Power Point.

Experience

  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Licensure, Certification, Registration: Phlebotomy Certificate preferred.
  • Experience: 3-5 years of phlebotomy-related work experience, including 2-3 years of team lead/supervisory experience work required.

  • Position 1. Clinical Laboratory Administrator - Provides general managerial support and oversight.
  • Position 2. Medical Director - Provides diagnostic and technical consultation.
  • Position 3. Support Services Manager - Provides supervision, technical, and managerial oversight. Work together to complete phlebotomy services. Provide oversight of all Support Service areas.
  • Position 4. Sr. Medical Technologists/Medical Technologists - Work together to complete testing and associated supporting work.
  • Position 5. Medical Laboratory Technicians - Work together to complete testing and associated supporting work.
  • Position 6. Phlebotomists/Phlebotomist - Work together to complete phlebotomy services.
  • Position 7. Computer Operators Provide oversight for laboratory duties.

Scope/Impact Statement

The Anna Jaques Hospital Laboratory provides patient care by performing laboratory services which are scientifically sound, timely, and accurate through systems that satisfy service expectations, ensure continued quality and enhance the understanding of laboratory medicine.
