Laboratory Scientist Manager 3, Environmental Surveillance Unit
About the role
The Environmental Surveillance (ES) Unit manager oversees and directs inorganic and organic testing within the Environmental Chemistry (EC) Section. This includes managing laboratory scientists, technicians, and student assistants who conduct tests on biological tissues and environmental samples for environmental contaminants.
Responsibilities
- Assigns work and approves leave
- Conducts in-service training and reviews work
- Conducts employee performance appraisals
- Writes laboratory procedures and reviews laboratory results
- Oversight of instruments, equipment, and supplies
- Preparation and review of quality assurance records
- Ensures compliance with Bureau’s Quality Assurance (QA) and Safety plans
- Serves as the technical consultant for the State of Michigan
- Supports other lab operations as needed
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, forensic science, biology, microbiology, or a related pure or applied science
- Five years of experience equivalent to a Laboratory Scientist or Microbiologist, including three years equivalent to a Laboratory Scientist P11 or Microbiologist P11, two years equivalent to a Laboratory Scientist 12 or Microbiologist 12, or one year equivalent to a Laboratory Scientist Specialist 13, Microbiologist Specialist 13, or Laboratory Scientist Manager 13
