About the role

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is currently seeking a part-time, contractual Laboratory Research Technician to join the School of Medicine - Department of Pharmacology and Physiology. This is a 20 hours/week position.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine biological procedures such as gel electrophoresis, blotting, chromatography, and DNA extractions
  • Performs chemical procedures such as simple synthesis, or product isolation, or biophysical procedures such as optical and kinetics measurements
  • Prepares chemical solutions, media, reagents, stains, and buffers
  • Assists in conducting routine assays such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) and complement fixations
  • Assists with sterile procedures
  • Performs clinical processes such as cell or tissue cultures
  • Collects, prepares, and processes specimens
  • Develops and prints film detailing biochemical or other analyses
  • Assists in conducting research on current scientific literature using computerized applications
  • Collects, records, and enters research data
  • Performs wipe tests, general housekeeping of laboratory, and operation of laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, meters, microscopes, incubators, autoclaves, spectrometers, and gas and liquid chromatographs
  • Maintains chemicals and equipment inventory

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a biological or chemical science
  • No experience required, but additional related experience and formal education may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis

Skills

  • General knowledge of the principles and practices of natural and/or chemical sciences
  • Ability to perform laboratory procedures using applicable equipment and techniques
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to use computers and related software applications
  • Ability to lift, transport and deliver materials and stock laboratory supplies and goods
  • Ability to wear and work in personal protective equipment

Pay

$24,069 per year at 50% FTE, commensurate with education and experience
