Laboratory Manager, Image and Data Acquisition Core

This position is part-time (20–30 hours per week) and reports to the IDAC Director and IMCI Director within the University of Idaho's Institute for Modeling Collaboration and Innovation (IMCI).

About the role

The IMCI Image and Data Acquisition Core (IDAC) Manager oversees operation, maintenance, service, and user training for core research equipment, including flow cytometers, microscopes, ddPCR, calorimetry, surface plasmon resonance, and pinning robots. The Manager administers user charges, provides core usage statistics, coordinates vendor support, and maintains productive relationships with University personnel, equipment users, and vendors.

Responsibilities

• Provide functional supervision of day-to-day activities of a laboratory or field research enterprise, including directing graduate and undergraduate students, staff researchers, and research support staff.
• Develop guidelines and protocols for lab operations.
• Assure quality control; maintain budget; operate, test, and repair electronic and/or scientific test equipment.
• Assist with the construction and modification of new and prototype scientific devices.
• Provide consulting services to department management, public and private sector entities.
• Provide final review of policies and procedures; recommend changes based on prevailing scientific evidence.
• Supervise scientific/technical staff.
• Direct and/or plan and implement a component of the scientific program.
• Direct and/or develop and monitor research projects in conjunction with other agencies.
• Direct and/or prepare reports assessing use, distribution, fate, exposure, and probability of adverse effects of chemicals and/or radiological constituents or other hazardous substances.
• Direct and/or develop and/or provide final detailed review of risk assessments and make recommendations for improvement where risk level is unacceptable.
• Establish work priorities and performance standards; may be involved in hiring, training, evaluating staff, assigning, and reviewing work.
• Make managerial decisions that directly affect the efficiency, cost, reputation, and service quality of the laboratory.
• Develop budgets, distribute budgeted funds, and exercise primary control over a relatively small budget.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in biology or related STEM discipline (required at time of application).
• Two years of post-Bachelor’s research work to include technical/administrative experience in research operations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Strong lab-based research experience.
• Technical expertise/experience with either flow cytometry or confocal microscopy or both.
• Interest in expanding expertise in new and cutting-edge technologies.
• Knowledge of research methods, statistics, and principles of optics, microscopy, or cytometry.
• Technical expertise in at least one of the following areas: flow cytometry, microscopy, and image acquisition techniques.
• Laboratory research management experience, including monitoring safety compliance, training personnel, and budgeting and procuring necessary supplies/equipment.
• Experience with developing technical written materials, such as scientific/lab protocols.
• Ability to communicate effectively with students, scientists, administrators, and vendors, orally and in writing.
• Strong customer service orientation.

Pay

$20.01 per hour or higher depending on experience.
