About the Role

The Laboratory Instructor/Coordinator combines teaching and lab support duties, requiring individuals to prepare and deliver lab sessions, supervise student assistants, maintain lab equipment, and ensure safety protocols are followed. They assist faculty in lab preparation and maintain lab inventory, purchase lab supplies, and organize storage of supplies and equipment. This position maintains oversight of lab safety and management of hazardous waste. Sponsorship is not available for this position.

Responsibilities

• Teaching and Instruction:
  • Prepare and deliver laboratory sessions, including materials, solutions, and organisms for experiments, as well as preparatory sessions for teaching assistants.
  • Teach laboratory sessions, instructing students on experimental procedures, equipment operation, and safety protocols.
  • Maintain knowledge of updated instructional materials, including laboratory manuals and instructor's guides.
  • Prepare, administer, and grade examinations and quizzes to assess student understanding of lab concepts and procedures.
  • Supervise student assistants by training and guiding them on their roles and responsibilities.
  • Maintain attendance and performance records for student assistants, providing feedback and guidance.
• Lab Management and Support:
  • Coordinate lab use and operations, ensuring efficient use of resources and equipment.
  • Prepare and maintain instructional materials, including media and solutions for laboratory experiments.
  • Maintain lab equipment, ensuring proper and safe functioning, and perform routine maintenance.
  • Acquire new materials and supplies, and manage lab inventory.
  • Ensure safety rules and regulations are followed, including proper handling of hazardous materials and equipment.
  • Supervise students in the laboratory setting, providing guidance and ensuring safety and proper conduct.
  • Coordinate all laboratory functions, including classroom lectures, skills laboratory activities, and student practice activities.
  • Assist with leadership of the department to maintain operations by participating in departmental meetings.
  • Participate in inspection readiness for appropriate regulatory and accreditation agencies.
  • Ensure the department complies with the Environmental Management System (EMS) manual and Environmental Health Occupational & Safety (EHS) policies.
  • Take part in meetings and committees relating to lab safety, EMS, EHS, and manual developments.
  • Perform other duties as requested by the departmental chair.

Requirements

• Master's degree in Biology, Chemistry, or a relevant field.
• 3 to 5 years of relevant work experience in a laboratory setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills

• Knowledge of Microsoft Office, E-procurement process, and GeorgiaVIEW.
• Skilled in teaching students and grading assignments.
• Skilled in the handling of hazardous wastes and communication.
• Ability to conduct chemical preparation and analysis.
• Ability to problem solve, make decisions, and maintain composure under pressure.
