We are looking for an experienced professional to provide on-site and remote advanced technical support to clinical and/or pathology laboratories, ensuring seamless LIS operations and coordination across multiple departments.

About the role

Coordinates and executes daily laboratory information systems (LIS) operations, acting as the subject matter expert and higher-level troubleshooter for end-user decision-making and LIS problem resolution. Facilitates LIS activities between laboratory operations, vendors, and Sutter Health Information Systems (SHIS) departments to ensure comprehensive end-user support. Orders new or replacement LIS hardware and performs a variety of tasks to maintain and enhance LIS functionality, including database validation, log monitoring, and fee schedule maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced technical support for LIS operations both on-site and remotely.
  • Coordinate LIS activities between laboratory operations, vendors, and SHIS departments.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and troubleshooter for LIS-related issues.
  • Order and manage LIS hardware, including new or replacement equipment.
  • Maintain and validate LIS databases, monitor logs, and update fee schedules.
  • Support laboratory/pathology quality assurance programs by generating reports, conducting audits, and participating in LIS-related projects.
  • Participate in accreditation surveys (CAP, CLIA, TJC) as the subject matter expert for information management policies and procedures.
  • Develop and update policies, processes, and procedures related to laboratory information management to ensure data integrity and patient confidentiality.
  • Advise laboratory operations on optimizing LIS efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Develop LIS training materials and assist in training end-users to maximize system utilization.
  • Extract data and create ad-hoc reports for laboratory management as needed.
  • Apply knowledge of laboratory workflows to resolve complex problems and recommend solutions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Computer Science, Information Management or Technology, Medical Technology, Physical Science, or a related field OR equivalent military education/experience.
  • Certification as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist Generalist (CLS-Generalist) or CLS Limited License.
  • Minimum of 5 years of recent relevant experience.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Advanced proficiency in computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite), networks, interfaces, protocols, and decision support systems.
  • In-depth understanding of laboratory operations, quality management, workflow (pre-, post-, and analytic phases), medical terminology, and billing.
  • Expertise in one or more LIS areas, maintaining subject matter expert-level knowledge.
  • Strong attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple projects in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with minimal supervision, adhering to standardized policies and procedures.
  • Problem-solving skills to evaluate and resolve complex issues, integrating laboratory workflow knowledge.
  • Excellent communication and partnership-building skills with team members, end-users, vendors, and healthcare providers.
  • Working knowledge of project management, including coordinating team efforts to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Ability to extract data and create ad-hoc reports for laboratory management.
  • Advanced knowledge of downstream applications, core systems integration, and HL7 specifications.
  • Expertise in data and application development lifecycle methodologies.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory/pathology regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.

Schedule

  • Full-time, 40 hours per week.
  • Shift: Days, Monday through Friday (8-hour shifts).
  • Weekend work as needed.

Pay

Pay range is $69.93 to $97.89 per hour, varying based on geographic location, experience, education, skills, licensure, certifications, and organizational needs.
