Laboratory Fabricator / CNC Machinist (2235)
About the role
The Laboratory Fabricator / CNC Machinist is responsible for manufacturing precision laboratory test specimens used for research, development, product validation, and customer testing. This hands-on role combines CNC machining, fabrication, tooling design, and process improvement to support both laboratory and production operations.
Responsibilities
- Fabricate precision test specimens for laboratory testing of medical and industrial products.
- Operate machining and fabrication equipment to produce components that meet dimensional and quality requirements.
- Design, develop, and build custom tooling, fixtures, and specialty equipment to support laboratory and R&D activities.
- Select appropriate tooling, equipment, and fabrication methods for current and future testing needs.
- Develop, document, and improve fabrication processes, procedures, and work instructions.
- Lead process improvement initiatives to improve quality, efficiency, material utilization, and throughput.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and efficient fabrication area using 6S principles.
- Provide technical expertise and machining support for production, engineering, and specialized testing requests.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams on laboratory expansion projects, equipment implementation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Participate in cross-training and support overall laboratory workflow and scheduling requirements.
- Ensure all work is performed safely and in accordance with company policies and quality standards.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in machining, toolmaking, fabrication, or a related manufacturing environment.
- Journeyman Toolmaker or Journeyman Machinist certification, or equivalent hands-on experience.
- Strong knowledge of machining practices, tooling, fixture design, and fabrication techniques.
- Above-average mechanical aptitude and mathematical skills.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel.
- Comfortable using computer software to support machining and process documentation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
Qualifications
- Preferred Experience supporting laboratory, prototype, or R&D environments.
- Experience designing custom fixtures or specialty tooling.
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance programs and process controls.
- Experience with continuous improvement methodologies such as Lean, 5S, or 6S.
- Familiarity with statistical analysis software such as Minitab.
Skills
- Strong mechanical aptitude and mathematical skills.
