Responsibilities

  • 20% Plan, schedule, prepare, and distribute materials and equipment for specific classroom laboratories, independently or with student employees. Maintain laboratory space and preparation areas clean, usable, and EHS compliant. Operate precision instruments such as autoclaves, dishwashers, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, and incubators.
  • 15% Collaborate with faculty course instructors each semester to determine course needs within budgetary limits. Use lab experiment schedules and the University purchasing system to order, track, and store course materials. Adjust weekly schedules occasionally to accommodate early, late, or weekend hours.
  • 15% Oversee daily lab operations for one or more courses, working with GSIs and faculty to achieve experimental goals. Troubleshoot issues during lab classes and assist GSIs in managing technical aspects, accidents, fire alarms, or other EHS incidents. Help adjust lab schedules for unscheduled or make-up activities.
  • 10% Regularly revise and update course manuals with detailed protocols, lists of lab materials, storage locations, setup, takedown procedures, and technical information.
  • 10% Manage one or more part-time student employees, including scheduling, EHS training, work accuracy oversight, lab skill training, and mentoring. Develop students' skills in lab safety, protocols, and work ethics.
  • 10% Implement EHS regulations, including the use of PPE, equipment, and hazardous waste collection.
  • 20% Perform pest management for the Plant Growth Facility serving EEB and MCDB labs. Stay current with industry practices, meet with faculty and lab members to address service issues, and develop pest control treatment plans. Conduct field audits, pest control surveys, pesticide applications, and health and safety evaluations to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or a related biological science, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with materials preparation, basic biology methods, chemistry techniques, and computer skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills; ability to work under pressure, solve problems, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong organizational skills and willingness to learn new laboratory techniques.
  • Team player with adaptability to changing circumstances, including schedule changes.
  • 2-3 years of relevant experience.
  • Certification by the State of Michigan pesticide applicator license in 7E (interiorscapes), or willingness to obtain it within the first six months of employment.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Biology or a related biological science (desired).
  • Experience with laboratory equipment operation and computer software.
  • High-level interpersonal, email, and verbal communication skills.
  • Flexibility with work schedules, including occasional weekend work.
  • Problem-solving skills and independence in meeting deadlines.
  • Experience providing guidance to staff.
  • Hands-on experience with lab techniques and knowledge of protein, RNA, DNA analysis, microbiology, vertebrate anatomy, genetics, botany, animal physiology, plant taxonomy, Drosophila melanogaster stock handling, or EHS (desirable).

Schedule

  • This is a 9-month recurring seasonal appointment, predominantly in-person/on campus.
  • Occasional flexibility for remote work may be available after initial onboarding, at the supervisor's discretion.
  • Schedule may include early, late, or weekend hours as needed.

Pay

Salary range for this position: Coordinator Level $42,300 - $53,000.
