About the role

The Laboratory Assistant processes outpatient test requests, performs venous and capillary collection of blood specimens for analysis, and processes specimens for reference testing. With supervision, may perform waived and moderately complex testing. Responsibilities include performing chain-of-custody drug collections and other support services for the laboratory, maintaining required documentation to comply with accrediting agencies, and performing duties consistent with written procedures and regulatory requirements. The role supports department goals for service, quality, regulatory compliance, financial performance, patient satisfaction, and integration of intra- and inter-departmental activities.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venous and capillary collection of blood specimens for analysis.
  • Process specimens for analysis and reference testing.
  • Perform waived and moderately complex testing with supervision.
  • Conduct chain-of-custody drug collections.
  • Provide various support services for the laboratory as assigned.
  • Maintain required documentation to comply with accrediting agencies.
  • Perform duties consistent with written procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Support department goals for service, quality, regulatory compliance, financial performance, patient satisfaction, and integration of intra- and inter-departmental activities.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, Equivalent, or higher.
  • Completion of a structured phlebotomy training course and clinical rotation is recommended.

Qualifications

Preferred:

  • 6 months experience in a hospital, reference laboratory, physician office, outpatient clinic, or other medical setting.
  • Phlebotomy certification by ASCP or another nationally recognized certifying agency, such as:
    • National Healthcare Association (NHA) – Clinical Laboratory Phlebotomy Examination (CLPlb)
    • American Society of Clinical Pathologists – Phlebotomy Technician Examination [PBT(ASCP)]
    • International Academy of Phlebotomy Sciences (IAPS)
    • National Phlebotomy Association (NPA)
    • American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT)
    • National Phlebotomy Certification Examination (NPCE)
    • National Phlebotomy Solutions (NPS)
    • American Medical Technologists (AMT)
    • Other national certification as approved by Laboratory Service Line leadership

Schedule

  • 40 hours per week.
  • Monday - Friday (4 am - 12:30 pm).
  • Required to work rotational weekends and holidays.
