Laboratory Assistant I
About the role
Prepares, assigns, and delivers pathology slides from histology and cytology laboratories to pathologists. Coordinates and schedules autopsy procedures as needed. Assists with clinical specimen collection and processing activities. Receives, identifies, accesses, processes, batches, and transports specimens in-house and to offsite locations for pathology services. Completes repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment promptly and accurately, including documentation, with minimal backlog. Maintains, cleans, and disinfects laboratory equipment. Performs materials management duties, such as maintaining supply inventories and transporting equipment/supplies. Follows appropriate safety policies, including the use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling. Demonstrates understanding and adherence to the Chemical Hygiene plan and Infection Control policies. Transports hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area, completing required training for proper handling and transport.
Responsibilities

- Tracks and restocks inventory, as appropriate
- Interacts in a team environment, promoting a collaborative environment
- Communicates appropriately and effectively with patients and their family, hospital staff, nurses, physicians, and other health care professionals
- Manages laboratory instrument management
- Reads, writes, and speaks conversational English
- Uses basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Understands medical terminology
- Has completed a phlebotomy training program
Requirements
- High School Grad or Equiv
- Up-to-date knowledge of specimen fixatives and container types
- Up-to-date knowledge of pathology laboratory tests and ordering processes
- Ability to process pathology specimens with appropriate use of hospital and laboratory information systems
- Ability to evaluate collected specimens for volume, collection containers, and related measures
- Ability to accession specimens, evaluate samples for proper submission, and document issues
- Ability to track and restock inventory, as appropriate
- Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Completion of a phlebotomy training program
Qualifications
- Six Months in AdventHealth Lab
Skills
- Up-to-date knowledge of laboratory instrument management

- Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures in the health care industry
