About the role

Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC), founded in 1953, is a multi-campus institution located in Upstate New York. It offers over 80 degree and certificate programs across three schools: Business and Liberal Arts, Health Sciences, and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). HVCC is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system and serves approximately 9,000 students annually. The college is committed to career and transfer preparation, workforce training, distance learning, and serving a diverse student population.

Responsibilities

  • Constructs, assembles, and maintains HRS (HVAC) laboratory equipment.
  • Orders, maintains, and controls inventory of laboratory supplies, including refrigerants, equipment, supplies, and tools.
  • Issues lab equipment and supplies to students and assists in student services provided by the Applied Technologies Department.
  • Maintains the cleanliness of laboratories, storage areas, and equipment.
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of related records and reports, such as the Applied Technologies Department’s inventory of equipment and furnishings.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs to laboratory equipment.
  • Works with Lab Assistant colleagues in the Applied Technologies Department to ensure all programs are supplied and maintained.

Requirements

  • Must be either a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Lawful Permanent Resident of the United States.
  • Candidates must have been legal residents of New York State for at least four months immediately preceding the date of the test.
  • Pursuant to subdivision 4a of Sec. 23 of the Civil Service Law, preference may be given to successful candidates who have been legal residents of the municipality to which the appointment is to be made for at least four months preceding the date of the written test.
  • Selected candidate will need to sit, pass, and be eligible on the next available Rensselaer County Civil Service Exam for Laboratory Assistant to be considered for permanent appointment.
  • Minimum qualifications include graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and two years of full-time paid experience working in a particular kind of scientific or technical laboratory or performing skilled services in the particular technical occupation or trade associated with the specific title; or graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s Degree in the scientific or technical field indicated in the title; or an equivalent combination of training and experience as indicated above.
  • Will need to possess or obtain an EPA 608 Certification within six months of employment.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from High School or possession of an equivalency diploma and two years of full time paid experience working in a particular kind of scientific or technical laboratory or performing skilled services in the particular technical occupation or trade associated with the specific title: or graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s Degree in the scientific or technical field indicated in the title; or an equivalent combination of training and experience as indicated above.
  • Will need to possess or obtain an EPA 608 Certification within six months of employment.

Skills

  • Experience in constructing, assembling, and maintaining HRS (HVAC) laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to order, maintain, and control inventory of laboratory supplies.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance and minor repairs to laboratory equipment.
  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.

Pay

This is a 40-hour 12-month position with an hourly rate of $24.90 if employed prior to September 1, 2026.
