Laboratory Assistant

About the role
Utilizes phlebotomy skills for collection of patient samples. Fulfills departmental responsibilities with the long-range plan, mission, vision, and values of the hospital. Promotes a supportive environment that encourages collegiality. Performs computer processing of patient specimens before and after collection, processes and distributes patient reports, and ensures specimen integrity by adhering to laboratory procedures.
Responsible for competently handling and processing laboratory specimens, sending them to the appropriate reference labs for testing, answering specimen requirement questions, mailing/faxing copies of reports to physicians as necessary, and following up with reference labs on any overdue test results.

- Meets mutually agreed-upon performance goals/objectives established annually as listed on the Performance Management Plan.
- Displays courteous behavior and cooperative relationships with customers and co-workers.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent; one year of previous experience preferred.
- Ability to collect samples from every age group with skill.
- Basic computer skills and communication ability.
Work Environment
- Regularly exposed to the risk of blood-borne diseases; protective gear provided.
- Limited contact with patients in a wide variety of circumstances.
- Occasionally subjected to irregular work hours and pressure due to multiple phone calls and inquiries from doctors and nurses.
