Pay

Starting Pay Rate Range: $17.42 – $21.72 per hour. Laboratory Assistant I: $17.42–$20.02; Laboratory Assistant II: $18.90–$21.72; Sr Laboratory Assistant: $18.90–$21.72 (determined by knowledge, skills, and experience of the applicant).

Schedule

Scheduled Weekly Hours: 32. Shift requires the ability to work assigned schedules and hours as determined by the department.

About the role

As a Laboratory Assistant at Monument Health, you will begin your healthcare career with no experience necessary. You will demonstrate commitment to patient/family experience, quality, safety, and financial stewardship; promote a safe working environment; and support the department by performing venipuncture and capillary punctures using appropriate phlebotomy devices, and properly collecting and processing specimens for testing.

Responsibilities

  • Establish cooperative working relationships with caregivers, physicians, and leaders by promoting professionalism, compassion, and communication.
  • Be punctual and ready to fulfill duties of the assigned shift.
  • Obtain blood specimens accurately and quickly using proper technique with attention to AIDET, patient identification, patient care, safety, and infection control practices.
  • Restock supplies.
  • Receive and process samples delivered to the lab; store samples appropriately.
  • Track add-on and extra samples; store and discard specimens.
  • Perform daily hold-over logs and resolve sample problems.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and perform a variety of clerical and computer functions to ensure smooth operation of the department.
  • Distribute specimens to the appropriate delivery point in each laboratory department.
  • Answer the telephone in assigned sections.
  • Participate in departmental and system-wide quality improvement initiatives as requested.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent in General Studies (required).
  • Preferred Education: NAACLS phlebotomy program.
  • Certification (one of the following): Phlebotomy Blood Technician (PBT) – American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP); Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) – National Phlebotomy Solutions; Phlebotomy Certification from an accredited university or accredited training professionals; Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) – ASCP; Certified Medical Laboratory Assistant (CMLA) – American Medical Technologists (AMT).
  • Experience: 1+ years in Clinical Laboratory and/or Healthcare (required).
  • Physical Requirements: Medium work – exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 30 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
