About the Role

Full-time, benefited position working 72 hours every two-week pay period. Days of work are Monday through Friday with variable hours, including every 4th weekend. No holidays or call shifts.

Responsibilities

  • Collects venous and capillary blood specimens according to laboratory protocol.
  • Maintains phlebotomy tray and work area to minimize exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
  • Provides appropriate laboratory services and care to infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics in accordance with established standards.
  • Assists with inventory and receiving supplies.
  • Performs clerical duties such as filing patient reports and maintaining statistics for workload recording.
  • Processes specimens for in-house testing or reference laboratories.
  • Performs urine drug screens, breath alcohol testing, and legal blood alcohol draws with provided certification.
  • Adheres to hospital and department policies, including exposure control and safety policies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
  • May orient new personnel and ensure proper procedures are followed.

Requirements

  • Certification as a phlebotomist is preferred; ability to be trained on the job.
  • BLS certification for CPR required.
  • Must attend Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCI) training as part of department orientation.
  • Previous work experience in a medical setting and basic knowledge of human anatomy and medical terminology is beneficial.
  • Punctual and regular attendance is essential.
  • Performs point-of-care testing (POCT) including quality control as needed.
  • Must demonstrate independent judgment in prioritizing patient needs and selecting specimen collection methods.
  • Frequent contact with patients, families, physicians, nurses, and co-workers, often in critical situations.
  • Must speak, write, and comprehend English clearly.
  • Must be able to read and understand department policy manuals.
  • Visual acuity and color perception necessary for laboratory procedures.
  • Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.
  • Must provide a vehicle for transportation and hold a valid North Dakota driver’s license.

Physical & Sensory Requirements

  • Moderate physical effort, including prolonged standing or kneeling at patient bedside, frequent walking, and handling sample materials.
  • Repetitive tasks such as pipetting, labeling, and preparing specimens.
  • Moderate sensory effort for observing collection areas, viewing and measuring samples, and detecting changes in sample tests.
  • Continuous visual observation, standing, hands and finger dexterity, and hearing/listening.
  • Frequent walking, sitting, reaching with hands and arms, stooping/kneeling/crouching.
  • Occasional climbing, driving, and working with hazardous materials.
  • Frequent lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling up to 10 pounds; occasional up to 25–50 pounds; rarely up to 75 pounds.
