About the role
The Lab Assistant position is under the supervision of the Office Manager. The primary responsibilities include collecting and processing specimens from patients, documenting results according to established procedures, and assisting with specimen analysis, instrument maintenance, and quality control.
Responsibilities
- Collects appropriate specimens from patients as ordered.
- Sends specimens to reference laboratories for any testing not performed in-house.
- Maintains proper documentation as described by the quality assurance program, including accessioning logs, test report logs, quality control logs, equipment records, and checklists.
- Charts patient results in a timely manner.
- Updates and files all daily paperwork, lab logs, and maintenance logs.
- Processes incoming orders for lab testing.
- Processes in-house and incoming results for charting.
- Uses equipment effectively, skillfully, and efficiently.
- Maintains equipment and work area as directed.
- Performs specimen analysis of all chemistry, hematology, immunology specimens as directed.
- Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and ensures that all supplies are viable before using in patient testing.
- Performs patient assessment for chief complaint, medication reconciliation, and pertinent history.
- Inputs data in ONCO EMR.
- Efficiently performs blood draws and follows all lab procedures for specimen handling and processing.
- Obtains vital signs, PHQ9 and Pain scores, ensures accurate documentation in the EMR.
- Efficiently rooms patients according to office procedures.
- Complies with regulatory agency standards.
- Prep blood and bone marrow slides.
- Aids in medical procedures as required.
- Takes the required number of CEUs annually to meet C.O.L.A. requirements.
- Complies with all Federal and State laws and regulations pertaining to patient care, patients’ rights, safety, billing, and collections.
- Adheres to all company and departmental policies and procedures, including IT policies and procedures and Disaster Recovery Plan.
- Maintains and ensures the confidentiality of all patient information.
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED.
- BLS certification required upon hire or must be obtained within 30 days of employment (FCS will provide BLS course within the first 30 days).
Qualifications
- Less than 1 year of experience or the ability to pass a skills set assessment.

- Ability to collaborate closely with Physicians and Nurses.
