Laboratory Assistant

Position Summary

Performs routine and specialized assignments and demonstrates proficiency and understanding of the procedures in the areas of a clinical laboratory.

Qualifications

• Education: High School graduate or equivalent; completion of Phlebotomy certification program preferred.
• Experience: One (1) - two (2) year experience as a laboratory assistant; phlebotomy skills including pediatric blood draws required.
• License(s)/Certification(s) Required: CPR Certification

Skills & Abilities

• Ability to communicate effectively with the patients, health center staff, and the public.
• Ability to precisely follow written and verbal instructions
• Excellent organizational skills
• Ability to operate a computer/lab information system
• Good oral and written communication skills.

Essential Functions

• Performs equipment maintenance and temperature checks as needed.
• Performs accession samples, performs low and medium complexity laboratory testing as needed.
• Prepares buffers and reagents.
• Prepares samples for send-out to reference laboratory.
• Assists the Medical Technologist in operating various types of laboratory equipment to perform tests in chemistry, bacteriology, urine analysis, and hematology.
• Maintains laboratory logs of tests as required and in accordance with established policies and procedures.
• Other duties as assigned.
