Laboratory Assistant (32193)

About the Role

The Laboratory Assistant supports staff by handling telephone calls, daily maintenance, administrative tasks, data entry, and filing within a pathology laboratory.

Responsibilities

• Ensure proper accessioning and labeling of all tissue samples.
• Process paperwork associated with accessioning and reporting.
• Prepare reagents for tissue processing and routine slide staining under direct supervision.
• Perform routine H&E staining, either manually or automated.
• Distribute slides to pathologists.
• File blocks, slides, and paperwork.
• Discard specimen containers.
• Perform specimen pickups as needed.
• Cover slip stained slides, either manually or automated.
• Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment.
• Handle all assigned clerical duties associated with the Pathology laboratory.
• Ensure compliance with corporate safety, quality control, and quality assurance standards.
• Adhere to all local, federal, CLIA, and CAP regulations.
• Maintain a clean and well-organized work area.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; Associate of Science preferred.
• One (1) year of experience in a laboratory setting preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Frequently stand, walk, and sit for extended periods.
• Use hands to finger, handle, feel objects, tools, or controls.
• Reach with hands and arms.
• Occasionally climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Constantly talk, hear, and smell.
• Frequently lift 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move 25 to 50 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Equipment Operated

• Standard office equipment: computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
• Laboratory equipment used daily.

Work Environment

• Professional laboratory environment.
• Frequent exposure to toxic/caustic chemicals, moving/mechanical parts, sharp objects, blood or body fluids, communicable diseases, computer monitors, and repetitive motions.
• Local travel in the region may be required to another location as needed.
