Laboratory Animal Technician - (Part-Time/Contractual C1)

Two contractual Laboratory Animal Technician positions are available in the Department of Surgery's world-renowned Cardiac Xenotransplantation program under the direction of Dr. Muhammad Mohiuddin. These roles oversee the care and treatment of research animals, ensuring compliance with federal regulations and research appropriateness. All employees are expected to work primarily within the State of Maryland.

Responsibilities

• Determine work priorities, plan, and schedule tasks; assign and review work; conduct hands-on training of animal care personnel.
• Provide technical assistance with research-related activities, including data collection, experimental procedures (e.g., injections, specimen collection, animal observation).
• Assist in implementing and administering policies and procedures for areas of responsibility.
• Initiate and prepare documentation for purchase transactions, recommend vendors, and follow up on the ordering process.
• Maintain the animal facility according to standard operating procedures.
• Perform all duties of an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician.

Requirements

• Education: High School Diploma or GED.
• Experience: One year in a laboratory animal facility supporting a research project similar to this program.
• Other: For Biosafety Laboratories Level 3 (BLS3), successful completion of Department of Justice security clearance for work with Select Agents and Toxins is required by federal regulation.

Skills

• General knowledge of husbandry practices in a laboratory animal environment.
• Ability to operate standard laboratory animal equipment (e.g., scales, autoclaves, cage washers, steam cleaners).
• Physical ability to lift feed/bedding, move heavy equipment, and work in personal protective equipment.
• Proficiency in following standard operating procedures and providing guidance/training to others.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Computer and standard office equipment operation.

Preferred Skills

• Experience with Non-Human Primates.
• General knowledge of natural/chemical sciences and safe handling/disposal of specimens and materials.
• Ability to perform laboratory procedures under supervision using applicable equipment and techniques.

Conditions of Employment

• Selected candidates may undergo medical inquiries/examinations to determine job fitness.
• Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) as a Laboratory Animal Technician may be required.
• BLS3 environments require additional training, proficiency demonstrations, and medical surveillance participation.
• Current tetanus and/or diphtheria vaccinations may be required.

Pay

$21.75/hour.
