Laboratory Animal Technician
About the role
The Laboratory Animal Resource Center (LARC) contributes to and enhances the services and collaborative efforts of medical research at the Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine. In addition to the provision of basic husbandry for a wide variety of laboratory animal species, the veterinary staff and other highly experienced laboratory animal professionals of the IU School of Medicine LARC provide training, supplies, and specialized service support for medical research.
Responsibilities
- Provides animal husbandry and care for university animals used in research and/or education outcomes;
- Performs various other laboratory animal support functions (such as cleaning and maintenance of laboratory and/or animal housing units and various equipment);
- Receives, stores, and rotates feed, bedding, and other animal husbandry supplies and equipment;
- Maintains/verifies proper record keeping (census, animal health, document sanitation and equipment maintenance);
- Provides technical support for LARC and research investigators (treatments, sample collection for sentinels, weaning litters, and administering diets, etc.);
- Maintains proper sanitation, environment, and health status of housing units;
- Maintains/verifies proper record keeping (census, animal health, document sanitation and equipment maintenance);
- Monitors animal health and observes for overt signs of disease and report any changes/concerns in animal health;
- Handles, restrain, and transfer animals as directed;
- Affords assistance to higher level Animal Care Technicians and facility users and performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Required High School Diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED).
- Required Valid driver's license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire.
- Preferred Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification upon date of hire.

Pay
$18.16 with additional compensation available based on experience and education.
Schedule
This position requires the ability to move about for long periods of time, perform repetitive movements, and operate equipment, tools, or controls. It also requires the ability to move items weighing up to 40 pounds. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential duties with or without an accommodation.
