Labor Standards Internship - Hourly - Albany

About the role

The Central Investigation Unit (CIU) is responsible for reviewing every claim of labor law violation submitted to the Division of Labor Standards for workers in New York State. CIU staff review incoming claims and accept, reject, or recommend referral to another legal avenue. Accepted claims are docketed as cases, and a notification letter is mailed to the employer within 48 hours, initiating most Labor Standards investigations.

Responsibilities

• Learn the claim-to-case process, including how claims are reviewed, developed into cases, and distributed to district offices statewide for investigation.
• Use various systems, including the internet, Worker Protection Case Management System, shared folders, and mailboxes.
• Type documents accurately, review staff members' work, scan and file documents, and answer telephone inquiries from the public.
• Search databases, conduct interviews, prepare letters explaining findings, and report on production.

Requirements

• Be 18 years of age or older.
• Be actively enrolled in a New York State college, university, or graduate program, or be a New York State resident attending an out-of-state institution.
• Have completed a minimum of one year as a student at a degree-granting two- or four-year college or university (part-time students may qualify with equivalent academic credits), or be a currently enrolled graduate student or accepted into a graduate degree program.
• Have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or equivalent letter grade.

Preferred Skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, Teams).
• Strong typing skills and familiarity with Word programs.
• Attention to detail, including accuracy, minimal typos, and proper document formatting.
• Ability to navigate multiple screens to enter and/or gather information.
