Duties & Responsibilities

  • Purpose of Position:
  • This class of positions encompasses the scopes of practice of clinical laboratory technologists and, where appropriate, cytotechnologists and histotechnologists, in accordance with Article 165 of the New York State Education Law and Title 10 of the New York State Public Health Law. Additionally, performs clinical laboratory work that varies in degree of difficulty and/or supervises a major program initiative or activity. All personnel perform related work, as appropriate to area(s) of assignment and licensure.
  • Under general direction, with extensive latitude for independent judgment and decision making, supervises, directs, trains, assigns work to, establishes schedules for work completion, and reviews and evaluates work performance of personnel in a large laboratory or more than one small laboratory, performing tests and complex procedures in laboratory specialties and subspecialties; supervises and directs laboratory staff in a water pollution control laboratory in the performance of laboratory tests for fecal matter and microscopic algae; performs biochemical, plankton, zooplankton and other species of analyses.

Assignment Levels I - III

Qualifications

  • Valid license as a clinical laboratory technologist, cytotechnologist, or histotechnologist issued by the NYSED.
  • For Appointment to Levels IV and V: In addition to meeting the qualification requirement of Assignment Level II, candidates must also meet one of the qualification requirements of a laboratory supervisor as outlined in Title 10, Section 58-1.4 of the New York Public Health Law.

Special Notes

  • Qualifying experience is not limited to New York State.
  • Candidates that are solely licensed or issued permits to practice as cytotechnologists or histotechnologists may only be assigned work, including supervising personnel performing laboratory work, in a laboratory discipline/specialty appropriate to their license or permit.
  • Candidates that are licensed or hold permits to practice as clinical laboratory technologists may be assigned work, including supervising personnel performing laboratory work, in all laboratory disciplines/specialties.
