Lab Technologist

About the role

The Laboratory Technologist performs laboratory testing procedures and provides clinical result interpretation according to established procedures, ensuring quality standards are met. The Technologist performs tests in compliance with departmental standards, reviews and verifies results to ensure data validity, and interprets results. This position applies appropriate procedural techniques related to specimen procurement and handling, instrument operation, operator maintenance, universal precautions, and inventory monitoring. The Technologist participates in the evaluation of new equipment, troubleshoots equipment problems, and performs and documents quality control procedures and proficiency testing. This role works with the Laboratory Supervisor/Manager to resolve quality control, patient, or procedural problems and recommends enhancements to laboratory procedures. The position supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts, and demonstrating a commitment to teamwork and cooperation.

Responsibilities

• Perform laboratory testing procedures and interpret clinical results.
• Review and verify test results to ensure data validity.
• Apply procedural techniques for specimen procurement, handling, and instrument operation.
• Perform and document quality control procedures and proficiency testing.
• Participate in the evaluation of new equipment and troubleshoot equipment problems.
• Collaborate with the Laboratory Supervisor/Manager to resolve quality control, patient, or procedural issues.
• Recommend enhancements to laboratory procedures.
• Provide quality customer service and participate in performance improvement efforts.
• Demonstrate a commitment to teamwork and cooperation.
• Comply with laboratory Fraud and Abuse policies and requirements as an employment condition.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree and completion of an accredited medical technology program or meets FDA qualifications for CLIA (1988 Clinical Lab Improvement Amendments) standards for all laboratory and high complexity testing.
• MT/MLS/BB/C/H/M/MB/SC/SH/SM ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) certification eligible or equivalent (American Medical Technologists - AMT). Certification is required within 24 months of hire or transfer and must be maintained if not grandfathered from the Board of Registry (BOR). Participation in 12 CEUs annually is required.
• Ability to distinguish colors.
• Ability to stand, bend, and perform manual manipulation for extended periods, including light lifting up to 20 lbs.
• Potential exposure to hazards of the hospital environment, including infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous substances, and potential injury.
