The Role

The Laboratory Technician – Footwear at VF is responsible for testing raw materials, foams, textiles, polymers, adhesives, hardware components, and full-footwear to assess their physical and mechanical properties. Key responsibilities include performing tests in accordance with established standards, collaborating with team members, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Test physical and performance properties of footwear foams, materials, and trims using SATRA, ASTM, ISO, and internal VF test methods.
  • Conduct full-footwear performance testing such as impact and energy return analysis, compression and cushioning durability, flex endurance and fatigue testing, slip resistance, abrasion, and traction testing.
  • Partner with Lab Management and Engineers to develop and refine test methods for new materials and innovations.
  • Review and generate detailed test reports, dashboards, and summaries of results as needed.
  • Collaborate with Materials Commercialization, QA, and Product teams as a technical expert.
  • Train and mentor new staff and temporary help.
  • Maintain and calibrate test equipment, file test reports and specimen cards, and manage physical inventory.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent clinical or laboratory experience in a relevant field.
  • 3-5 years of professional experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Familiarity with SATRA and ASTM test methodologies.
  • Familiarity with laboratory workspace settings.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and attention to detail skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and email communications.
  • Superior mathematical aptitude.
  • Basic filing skills.
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs and stand for extended periods.

Qualifications

  • High color perception (color vision).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Experience with laboratory equipment and procedures.

  • Technical proficiency in SATRA and ASTM test methods.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.
  • Organizational and attention to detail skills.
  • Mathematical aptitude and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
