Responsibilities
- Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program and safety standards.
- Properly collects blood samples from venous and capillary sites as required by the clinic.
- Properly handles all specimens including prompt transport to the lab, special tube requirements, on ice, as needed, preparation and preservation, without contamination, etc.
- Identifies and labels specimens.
- Performs all routine and specialized lab tests trained for as assigned.
- Runs, maintains and/or repairs laboratory equipment.
- Performs and documents quality control samples in assigned work area.
- Cleans and sterilizes equipment, glassware and instruments.
- Prepares solutions, reagents and stains according to standard formulas and procedures.
- Answers phones and responds to physician inquiries regarding lab results.
- Maintains required records, reports, statistics, logs, files to comply with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies, i.e. CLIA.
- Acts as CLIA trainer for clinic as appropriate and has thorough knowledge of lab requirements.
- Informs patients of test results and medication changes or adjustments as needed after physician reviews and approves report.
- Plans work to insure maximum productivity with minimum amount of “carry over” work, while keeping overtime to a minimum.
- Responsible for communicating to the other appropriate staff needed information about patient samples or instrument performance.
- Complies with OSHA standards, Universal Precautions, safety manuals and laboratory policies and procedures including, but not limited to, wearing gloves and using safety needles.
- Uses fundamentals of AIDET when communicating with patients.
- Maintains all insurance payor billing requirements and lab billing procedures so profitability of lab is maximized.
- Attends meetings as required and participates on committees as directed.
Qualifications
- Minimum Education: None specified; will accept any combination of formal education and/or prior work experience sufficient to demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skill and ability needed to perform the essential tasks of the job, typically such as would be equivalent to a high school diploma or GED.
- Preference may be given to individuals possessing a HS diploma or GED.
- Minimum Experience: Entry Level Position.
- Must possess basic computer skills, phlebotomy skills, and know basic medical terminology.
- OSHA and CLIA annual training.
