Lab Technical Specialist – Chemistry

This is an onsite full-time, salaried position located in Phoenix, AZ, with a schedule of Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM.

About the Role

This position works closely with the Chemistry Section Director and lab leaders to ensure efficient technical operations, exceptional service, and full compliance with regulatory bodies. Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain policies, guidelines, and procedures in alignment with regulatory requirements and professional standards.
  • Ensure adherence to departmental operating and capital budgets.
  • Maintain professional and technical competency through continuous learning and awareness of current trends and technologies.
  • Participate in hospital and department operational and quality improvement initiatives; evaluate systems and implement changes to enhance effectiveness.
  • Perform patient testing, quality control testing, and instrument maintenance to ensure compliance with safety guidelines.
  • Oversee daily technical operations, including workflow monitoring, problem resolution, and troubleshooting to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Provide guidance, mentoring, and direction to staff to support ongoing development and achievement of goals.
  • Lead new assay implementation, policy/procedure review, quality assurance, equipment maintenance, compliance/accreditation activities, training/competency assessments, research projects, and inventory management.
  • Collaborate with Section Supervisors, Directors, Managers, and leadership to ensure high-quality technical operations across all locations.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as requested.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science or a related field.
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Technologist in Chemistry (C) ASCP Certification or equivalent.
  • Specialist in Chemistry (SC) ASCP Certification or eligibility to obtain within one year of employment (preferred).
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience performing chemistry testing in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Experience with new equipment/assay implementation, middleware/LIS validation, creating/reviewing SOPs, training/competency assessment, and quality assurance activities, including lab inspections.
  • Previous leadership experience (preferred).
  • Pediatric experience (preferred).

  • Constantly: Fine motor skills, hearing, sitting, standing, talking, walking, near vision, color discrimination, use of keyboard/mouse/computer.
  • Occasionally: Pushing/pulling, stooping/crouching/kneeling/crawling, lifting up to 35 pounds without assistance.
  • Occasionally: Far vision.

Occupational exposure/risk potential includes an inside office and laboratory environment.
