Lab Technical Specialist – Blood Bank

This is an onsite full time, salaried position.

About the role

This position works closely with the Blood Bank Section Director and lab leaders to ensure efficient technical operations, exceptional service, and full compliance with regulatory bodies. Responsibilities

• Develops and maintains policies and guidelines; employs policies and procedures, regulatory guidelines, and professional standards to validate current practice requirements and support overall organizational values and mission.
• Ensures adherence to departmental operating and capital budgets.
• Maintains professional and technical competency in all aspects of laboratory technology through continuous knowledge pursuit and self-improvement.
• Participates in hospital and department operational and quality improvement initiatives; evaluates systems and practices, and implements changes to enhance effectiveness.
• Performs patient testing, quality control testing, and instrument maintenance procedures to ensure compliance with policies, regulations, and safety guidelines.
• Oversees daily technical operations of the laboratory section by monitoring workflow, resolving issues, and ensuring compliance with regulatory and licensing requirements.
• Oversees work activities of staff to ensure achievement of goals and outcomes; provides guidance, mentoring, and direction for staff development.
• Leads new assay implementation, policy/procedure review, quality assurance, equipment maintenance, compliance/accreditation, training/competency assessments, research projects, and inventory management.
• Collaborates with Section Supervisors, Section Directors, Managers, and leadership to provide technical supervision across all locations in the healthcare system.
• Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as requested.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science or related field.
• Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Technologist in Blood Bank (BB) ASCP Certification or equivalent.
• Specialist in Blood Bank (SBB) or eligible to obtain within one year of employment (preferred).
• A minimum of 4 years of experience performing blood bank testing in a clinical laboratory setting.
• Experience with new equipment/assay implementation, blood bank software updates, and quality assurance activities, including lab inspections and regulatory standards.
• Previous leadership experience (preferred).
• Pediatric experience (preferred).

Schedule

Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM.
