About the role

The Laboratory Technician is an entry-level position that provides key support for the Quality Department, including water testing, raw milk testing, raw and pasteurized load out testing, finished product testing, microbiological testing, chemical titrations, and work-in-process testing. Responsibilities include generating daily reports, data entry, project assistance, calibrations, and communicating with other departments.

Schedule

This is a night shift position with hours from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM, following a rotating 2-2-3 schedule: two days on, two days off, three days on, then repeating. Team members work every other weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday).

Responsibilities

  • Operate lab testing instrumentation (moisture/solids, protein, fat, pH, microbiological plating, Foss analytical equipment, pH meters) safely and efficiently.
  • Perform daily quality line audits, evaluations, and testing on the plant floor.
  • Conduct sensory evaluations on all finished products.
  • Accurately complete laboratory data worksheets, logs, and reports while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly, and well-stocked work area.
  • Use Microsoft Word and Excel for data management and communication.
  • Prepare solutions and media required for laboratory tests.
  • Notify the Quality Assurance Manager and operations supervisors of unusual results or product defects; perform re-checks as needed.
  • Report equipment damage, irregular activity, or unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Follow all safety, work, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and GLP rules.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Requirements

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand English.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • Sitting/Standing/Walking: 100% of the workday standing, with occasional sitting for plate counting or computer use. Walking on uneven concrete and tile surfaces.
  • Lifting/Carrying: Infrequent lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Pushing/Pulling/Bending/Stooping: Pushing/pulling small items, dolly transport of supplies, and bending to access lower cabinets or drawers.
  • Squatting/Kneeling/Twisting/Turning: Occasional squatting or kneeling to retrieve items; twisting or turning while seated or standing.
  • Climbing/Balancing/Reaching: Climbing small ladders, stairs, or footstools; reaching overhead for supplies or samples.
  • Grasping/Manipulating: Frequent grasping and manipulating of tools and samples.

Food Safety Requirements

  • Notify supervision of repairs or adjustments that may affect product quality or food safety.
  • Comply with the color-coded container policy in production areas.
  • Prioritize tasks to meet company, customer, and government standards.
  • Initiate actions to prevent nonconformities related to food safety, quality, or safety systems.
  • Identify and record problems related to food safety, quality, or processes.
  • Control further processing or delivery of nonconforming product until issues are corrected.
  • Ensure coverage by a similarly skilled employee during absences.
