About the role

The Laboratory Support Technician (LST) provides quality customer-oriented laboratory services including specimen procurement, processing, and related specialized procedures. They also serve as a resource for less experienced technicians, providing training and guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Understands and processes specimens according to study protocols.
  • Prepares workstations with essential supplies for smooth specimen processing.
  • Verifies and labels specimens according to laboratory policies.
  • Distributes specimens to appropriate lab sections within specific timeframes.
  • Centrifuges and aliquots specimens, following all special handling instructions.
  • Processes, prepares, and stores specimens for send-out to reference laboratories.
  • Monitors and records daily temperatures, performing scheduled maintenance of equipment.
  • Communicates and cooperates to improve patient services and the quality of each patient’s experience.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills with staff members and phone customers.
  • Establishes positive, professional relationships with coworkers and managers.
  • Delivers reports in a timely manner, respecting and following BMC's rules of confidentiality.
  • Answers the telephone according to department policy and procedure.
  • Completes all appropriate logs for documentation and troubleshooting, communicating to supervisor.
  • Incorporates Medical Center Values into all undertakings.
  • Manages time appropriately and meets BMC standards for attendance and punctuality.
  • Helps coworkers on different benches as needed.
  • Documents activities related to Quality Improvement initiatives.
  • Aids in the pickup and delivery of specimens.
  • Attends department meetings or reviews minutes and documents the review.
  • Performs special procedures as requested by supervisors, assistants, and specialists.
  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
  • Utilizes technical training and acquires in-depth knowledge of the Sunquest LIS and its functions.
  • Performs Sunquest order/entry, inquiry, crediting, and other basic LIS functions.
  • Performs patient registration functions, including information updates.
  • Ensures current information in the specimen order or comment.
  • Affords assistance in training new lab support technicians and students.
  • Commits to self-development by attending one BMC training session per year.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma.
  • One year of Phlebotomy, EKG, and/or specimen processing experience preferred.
  • Phlebotomy Certification (ASCP) preferred.

Qualifications

  • Works in a clinical laboratory where there is some exposure to unpleasant odors, hazardous materials, toxins, and infectious specimens.
  • Requires frequent walking and standing, and regular visual strain while closely examining specimens.

Skills

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Time management and punctuality.
  • Ability to follow protocols and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Sunquest LIS and its functions.
