Essential Functions
- Advanced knowledge of Electronic Medical Record and/or Laboratory Information System to place orders, receive specimens, route specimens, track specimens, store specimens, label specimens using the appropriate policy and procedure, and query test results.
- Maintains competency and performs waived and/or moderately complex diagnostic testing in areas such as Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Microbiology, and Molecular Diagnostics. This may also include instrument maintenance, quality control, and result troubleshooting.
- Provides clerical, administrative, and customer service support to the department. Answers phones and provides information to nursing floor and physicians, office staff, couriers and patients. Dispatch of couriers, as required.
- Carefully communicates procedures and instructions with patients, family members, and other caregivers and demonstrates empathy during every interaction. The Lab Support Assistant may be responsible for deescalating stressful situations calmly and respectfully.
- Maintains supply inventory. May track usage and place orders. Responsible for training and orientation of new caregivers. Assists in schedule management, daily caregiver assignments, and shift coverage.
- Led process improvement initiatives within the laboratory. May assist in improvement efforts outside of the laboratory.
Minimum Qualifications
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Demonstrated prior experience in clinical or pathology lab assistant role.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience teaching Laboratory testing concepts to others.
- Customer service experience.
- Laboratory testing experience.
- ASCP Lab Assistant Certification.
Physical Requirements
- Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, documents, monitors, identify equipment and supplies, and be able to assess customer needs.
- Frequent interactions with providers, colleagues, customers, patients/clients and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, needs, and issues quickly and accurately.
- Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate supplies and equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use for typing, accessing needed information, etc.
- For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
