About the role

This position involves supervising laboratory personnel, ensuring quality standards, and performing both administrative and technical duties as a Lab Technologist/Technician.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor test analyses and specimen examinations to maintain acceptable analytic performance levels; report problems to the assigned Technical Consultant.
  • Ensure remedial actions are taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
  • Assure proficiency testing is performed within the appropriate time frame.
  • Assist Physicians, Extenders, and Nurses with patient treatment and care, including triaging, obtaining vital signs, and preparing patients for medical treatment.
  • Handle requests from medical staff with respect and in a timely manner.
  • Supervise lab personnel to ensure responsibilities are carried out, work meets quality standards, and policies are followed.
  • Ensure patient test results are not reported unless test systems are functioning properly; report any issues to the Technical Consultant.
  • Submit monthly staffing schedules, approve payroll, and provide orientation and in-service training for lab personnel.
  • Assist in interviewing and on-site training of lab personnel; function as an administrator and Lab Technologist/Technician at least two days per week.
  • Evaluate and document the competency of testing personnel.
  • Evaluate lab personnel at 6 and 12 months during their first year and annually thereafter.
  • Assist lab personnel in resolving technical problems during testing, either in person or by telephone.
  • Maintain records of laboratory tests for two years.
  • Implement safety regulations as directed.
  • Review lab inventory data and notify management when adjustments are needed.
  • Ensure lab personnel understand new and revised policies and procedures.
  • Work with fellow employees and externs during on-the-job training.
  • Forward all Charge Change and Courtesy write-offs daily to the Administrative Services department.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in using the medical record system.
  • Maintain a clean work area by performing biological cleanup in accordance with OSHA Guidelines and completing other maintenance tasks.
  • Receive and store ordered supplies.
  • Be available as needed, as breaks and mealtimes may be interrupted for patient care and center operations.
  • Attend staff meetings as directed.
  • Foster teamwork in a positive and professional atmosphere.
  • Be willing to work at any center due to staffing needs, emergencies, or reduced workload.
  • Operate, maintain, and use medical and office equipment as trained.
  • Complete other duties as directed.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Minimum typing experience required.
  • At least one year of supervisory experience preferred.
  • High School graduate (or equivalent) and must meet one of the following:
    • For Maryland or Virginia: Associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology and two years of training/experience; or a bachelor’s degree in medical technology or a chemical, physical, or biological science and one year of training/experience.
    • For New Jersey or Pennsylvania: Bachelor’s degree in medical technology or a chemical, physical, or biological science, or HEW certification as a Medical Technologist, plus six years of laboratory experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of Medical Technology principles, concepts, and methodologies to perform a broad range of testing.
  • Knowledge of mathematical and statistical methods to calculate and convert analytical data into test results.
  • Skill in using and maintaining laboratory instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of related disciplines to integrate and correlate test results with other laboratory data and clinical information.
  • Able to produce reliable quality laboratory results under stressful conditions.
  • Able to perform CPR and update certification as needed.
  • Able to hear pages, bells, and phone systems.
  • Able to sit, stand, and walk for long periods (4–7 hours at a time).
  • Able to lift moderate to heavy items (20–50 lbs).
  • Excellent visual, verbal, written, and typed communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage numerous tasks simultaneously.
  • Must perform work as outlined in the Lab Technologist/Technician job description.
  • Must provide the highest quality medical care and professionalism.

Pay

Salary range: $39.50 – $44.00 per hour, depending on experience.
